Hello

I am Ed Kelley, great-grandson of Patrick J. Kelley, born in Kilrush, Co. Clare in 1824.  I am currently visiting Kilrush for a few days, and have visited the local library to start some research.  What I know of Patrick is that his mother's name was Honora, but I do not know her maiden name, or Patrick's father's first name, or if he had any siblings.  If anyone local would have either some information or helpful guidance, I would appreciate a reply.  I love visiting Kilrush and already feel at home.  I will check back for any responses. Thanks in advance.

Ed

  • Hi Ed,

I have forwarded your request and hope that someone will be in contact soon.

How long will you be staying in Kilrush?

  • When doing geneology located Patrick J. Kelly married to my GG Grandmother's sister Honora Burk (e). Patrick J. Kelly married Honora Burk about 1864.  They lived in Memphis, TN, buried in Calvary Cemetery - Memphis. Patrick arrived US about 1850, died 1903; Honora arrived with sisters 1850-1852, she died 1916. The Burk's are from the Kilrush area. All Burk's passed through Philladelphia, PA, some married in NY. I know how hard it is to identify "Kelly", however, your dates generally fit P. Kelly and all before arriving in US knew each other. My Grandmother a "Kelly", her family however from County Tyrone, passing through Clare on the way to the US. Her father Ed Kelly. Regards, C. Lynch

  • Hi Ed,

Yu might try the Clare County Library Local Studies Centre (building right beside it) and askfor Peter O'Beirne, he would possibly be able to assist you.

  • We are here until Tuesday morning, when we leave for Waterford.  On Friday, we went to Corofin, and shared all the info we have accumulated with the geneological center. They have done some preliminary research over the weekend and we will be contacting them within the half hour to see what they have come up with.  We checked with both the library & St. Senan's Church.  The library had good local information, but nothing that seems to tie directly with my family.  Of course, if I knew townland & parish, that would be great.  The church baptism records start 3 years after my gg father was born.

We did get a chance to go out to Scattery Island yesterday with a group & had a great time hearing old stories & walking around the structures, including standing inside the round tower.  We love Kilrush, and if the info I have so far is all I get, it still seems close enough to be home for me.

I'll post again when we know more from Corofin.

    Thanks.

  • It looks like you have a good line of information on your family.

The Honora that was my GG father Patrick's mother was widowed & living with his family in Iowa & 99 years old, according to the 1880 U.S. Census.  That would mean that she was probably born around 1781.

    Thanks for the reply.

  • Re: your Iowa connection. The mother Honora Burk(e) of the Honora Burke in Memphis also resided in Iowa with a daughter 1870 in Dubuque, IA. All of her daughters after marrioage except the one in Memphis lived and were buried in Iowa. The mother Honora was born 1796. Additionally our Kelly clan is all from Iowa - have strong ties re: Burk, Lynch, Kelly and Talty in Iowa.  regards, C. Lynch

  • Follow-up to your note - my previous reply. A second reference arrived and decide to post add'l info for your records. For reference the mother Honora Burk(e) I refer too (my GGG Grandmother) was married to Patick Burk(e). We have never been able to confirm if she arrived US with him or left during the famine because of hisi death in Ireland, and conditions thereafter. Honora's maiden name was Kane or Keane.  Regards, C. Lynch
