My great grandfather, James McMahon was baptised in North Kilrush in 1842 according to his marriage record to Margaret Conway from Bournea. They were married in Brisbane, Australia in 1867. I plan to visit Kilrush next month. Could you please advise if there is a particular church in North Kilrush which would have been in use back in 1842 when James was baptised. Would it be called North Kilrush or maybe just Kilrush? I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you, Denyse

  • I have checked the registers for those years and did not find a James born to Patrick. Some of the entries are barely legible and very dark so I also went on to Ancestry and had no luck there either. I did find the marriage and death details of James but that was all. There are lots of McMahons in Kilrush but none that match your quest. North Kilrush is a strange title and as a native have never heard it used. Are you sure it's Kilrush Co Clare? A couple of places in Ireland named Kilrush.

  • Dear Kay, thank you for your reply. I've re-checked the marriage cert for James & Margaret. It would seem that originally the place of birth was written as ' County Clare Ireland '. Then in different writing is 'n?? Kilrush'. I've always assumed this was 'Nth', but maybe it's something else - perhaps ' near Kilrush'. Oh dear, this family tree lark could drive you nuts!   Would love to hear if you have any further ideas. Regards, Denyse
