I am researching the surname FEWER. My ancestors came from Ireland, maybe Kilkenny but not sure.

They emigrated to Newfoundland Canada maybe around the 1750's. I have a Edmund +Richard  Fewerthat were there before 1800. Edmund married Frances O'Leary and she may also have been born in Ireland. any help would be appreciated as Fewer is not a common name but most I have seen listed in Griffiths lived in Kilkenny and Waterford in 1850.Trying to link my 1750 names to the 1850 still in Ireland. Thanks

  • Hi Sharon
I searched rootsireland for R & E Fewer (+ surname variants) in the 1700's and this is the first that came up:
Name: Richard Feor Date of Birth:
    Date of Baptism: 09-May-1756
    Address: Parish/District: TRINITY WITHIN(CATHED.)
    Gender: County Co. Waterford
    Denomination: Roman Catholic
Father: Edmund Feor Mother: Margaret Ryan
    Occupation:
    Sponsor 1 /
    Informant 1: Michael Murphy Sponsor 2 /
    Informant 2: Joanna Mollony

Family Search has none in the 1700's.

    I tried marriages on roots:
    Date of Marriage: 27-Oct-1768
Parish / District: St Patrick's Parish County: Co. Waterford
    Husband Wife
    Name: Patrick Donnevan Ann Feor
    Address:
    Denomination: Roman Catholic Roman Catholic
    Date of Marriage: 03-Nov-1734
Parish / District: St Patrick's Parish County: Co. Waterford
    Husband Wife
    Name: Martin Cassin Ann Feore
    Address:
    Denomination: Roman Catholic Roman Catholic

Unfortunately they have changed the search criteria so you have to have at least the first letter of a first name rather than being able to search for just a surname so I did most of the alphabet for marriages only 1700 to 1760 & here are the 'hits':

    Date of Marriage: 09-Jan-1754
Parish / District: Trinity Within County: Co. Waterford
    Husband Wife
    Name: Richard Norris Joanna Feor
    Address: Cathedral
    Denomination: Roman Catholic Roman Catholic
    Occupation:
    Age:
    Status:
    Husband's Father Wife's Father
    Name:
    Address:
    Denomination:
    Occupation:
    Husband's Mother Wife's Mother
    Name:
    Address:
    Denomination:
    Occupation:
    Witness 1 Witness 2
    Name: Edmund Feor Walter Sinnot
    NOTE EDMUND IS A WITNESS

    Date of Marriage: 24-Apr-1760
Parish / District: St John's Parish County: Co. Waterford
    Husband Wife
    Name: Robert Feoir Helen Power
    Address:
    Denomination: Roman Catholic Roman Catholic

Here's a C of I record - do you know whether they were RC or C of I?
    Date of Marriage: 27-Jan-1735
Parish / District: Trinity C of I County: Co. Waterford
    Husband Wife
    Name: Stephen Fewer Elizabeth Ward
    Address: Trinity Parish
Denomination: Church Of Ireland Church Of Ireland

You might need to do a bit of research to ascertain whether Feor is an early version or alternative spelling of Fewer. If not, & they were C of I, the last record could be yours.
I did try birth/baptisms for Stephen but no luck.
I tried death/burial records for a few letters 1700 to 1780 but no luck.
