Anne Connell came to Australia where she married a Croatian by the name of THomas Pavletich. They subsequently crossed the Tasman to Dunedin, New Zealand, where they had a large family and operated a hotel among other business interests. I'm part of a team from Toitu Otago Settlers Museum in Dunedin that is making a documentary about our region's early settlers with a focus on their home places as well as their colonial careers. We wil be visiting Callan later in the year to film and wondered if anyone in the parish knew about the Connells of Slade townland and could help us understand their background there. Anne's parents seem to have seven children baptised in Callan parish, with Anne in 1832 being the oldest and Ellen in 1851 the youngest. Each baptism records "Slade" as their home address but Daniel Connell's entry in Griffiths Valuation in 1849 links him to tenancy of a tiny plot of land in teh townland, just over 9 acres with no reference to a house. We'd appreciate local help to get a handle on this and any other infromation on the Connells at Slade.

A person listed as occupier on the valuation without a house or dwelling of some kind usually lived somewhere else, but due to living circumstances might not be listed separately - e.g if living with a sibling/parents/in-laws or in some sort of shared accomodation where they were not the principle occupant (or head of the household).
A search for [O']Connells in Callan on the valuation shows two additional entries in the same parish that could be the same person - a Daniel Connell occupying a small house in Drimeen townland, and a second Daniel Connell occupying a house, offices (i.e. shed/workshops/stables etc) and about 13 acres of land at Monarche Commons townland. In addition to the town of the same name there are about 63 townlands in Callan civil parish.
