My name is Simon Willis from New South Wales, Australia.  My Great, Great Grandfather, Daniel Brophy (born November 1832) emigrated to the USA from Castlecomer with his family in 1847.  He subsequently left New York in 1852 for the Australian goldfields.  His brother John remained in the US.

Daniel Brophy's father, William Brophy, was apparently involved in the abortive rebellion of 1798 and was forced to flee Ireland for Canada.  He apparently returned to Ireland in 1812.  William was married to Margaret (nee Purcell).

My wife and I are visiting Ireland in May 2017 and would like to gain information on relatives past and present and with luck meet with any still resident in the Castlecomer area.

Thank you in anticipation.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Roots Ireland shows that Daniel had a sister Catherine 1830 and a sister Judith 1835 and brother Patrick 1835. The 1849 Griffiths Valuation shows eight Brophy records in Castlecomer civil parish. The 1901 census shows 37 Brophys around Castlecomer. See links below.

I aslo provided a link to the online Irish phone book which is a partial list of phone users. Use the Residential TAB and you will see two Brophys around Castlecomer.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hi Simon, had a look on Irish Genealogy.ie for you but could not trace your ancestors your GGG Grandfather is probably not in the records released this year that go back sometimes the 1830s/40s.  Nor can I find William Bropy Birth, Marriage or Death but again he may if he may have  married earlier than the records show and would not have died in Castlecomer.

Also searched for Margaret Purcell (Bropy) but again no luck.  I finally did a search of Brophy's in Kilkenny/Casltecomer and then William as names generally were passed on through the family and if you look at the following link this might be of use depending on whether you know any other family members, or names might ring a bell with someone.  Best of luck.
