Hello!

I'm conducting my Flynn/Collins family research, specifically in Abbeyside or Dungarvan.

My ggggrandfather was John Flynn, a sailor. He married Hanoria/Hanora Collins on February 8, 1866 at the Catholic church in Abbeyside. They were both residents of Abbeyside at the time of marriage.

John Flynn's father was John Flynn. Hanoria Collins' father was Dennis/Denis Collins. Both were sailors.

Based on immigration records, it appears that John Flynn Jr was born around 1842 and Hanoria was born around 1847. John and Hanoria arrived in the U.S. around 1868. They resided in Chicago, Illinois.

In addition, in the Griffith's Valuation of 1868, it appears that John Flynn Sr. and Dennis Collins both lived on Main Street in Abbeyside.

Any help with my lineage would be very appreciated:)

Thank you!

Meg Flynn

  • Good Evening Elaine,

Thank you so much for taking the time to research my family. I appreciate this information to no end.

While I am a member of ancestry.com, I've hit a roadblock with the lineage. I cannot seem to find any immigration records for John and Hanora. I'm not wondering if he may have come to the U.S. first and his wife second? It appears that they did not have any children until they arrived in the U.S. so it's hard to pinpoint which Flynn is the right one. Additionally, they lived in Chicago with a huge Irish immigrant population.  I've come to realize that John Flynn is a very common name...it's even my dad's name:)

I also understand that Ireland lost a lot of its census records in the 19th century. Is that true?

I found out John's occupation as a sailor from his son's birth record. I believe it was also on their marriage certificate where I found his father's name and Denis Collins' name.

I sent an e-mail to St. Augustine's Church. Thank you for that lead. I'm going to keep plugging away for clues. Let me know if something turns up on your end.

Again, I appreciate your time in helping us solve this mystery!

    Meg
