We know that from the 1901 Census that my Great Grandfather, William and his wife, Fanny, were living at House 2, Dairyhill, Tullaghanbrogue, Kilkenny in 1901.   This is how the family is listed.

My grandfather, William P. Dunphy, born in 1875 in Kilkenny,  emigrated via Queenstown on Oceanic on Oct. 1, 1899.  His wife, my grandmother, Ellen Hennessey , born about 1873 to 1876,  emigrated in 18and settled in Hoboken, New Jersey.   He married Ellen Hennessey in  St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York City.   Their children were William, Frances, Josephine, Thomas, Robert and Edward.

I have applied for Irish Citizenship by Descent and will be grateful for any news you can provide.

  • Roger,

We think Ellen Hennessy (sp?) was daughter of James Hennessy and Johanna Knox.   Ellen was born May 22, 1872, in Kilmacow Parish, Kilkenny.  She had 7 or 8 siblings, one of which was a younger sister named Joanna.

Take a look at this 1901 census record. Could this be Ellen's mother and three siblings?

  • Roger:

Yes, it could be Ellen's mother.   Name, age and place are good fit.   And Ellen had a sister Johanna who was witness at Ellen's marriage in America.

    Thanks so much for this!

  • Mary Ellen,

I am distantly related to you on your great-grandfathers side. I can't provide you with a lot of information, as my mother's family is quite a private group of individuals, but if you want to email me, I can give you some more information about my great grandfather Robert Dunphy, who would be your grandfather's brother.

    Kind Regards,

    Bernadette Frances

  • Hello All,

Mary I was speaking to you previously regarding our family, and unfortuantely due to my own brother's sudden death, I stopped following up on my family tree. I'm very sorry for not replying, but as you can imagine, it was a very difficult time for me and my family.

Again, Valerie, Edward is my great-grandfather's brother.

The Dunphy land fell to my great grandfather Robert Dunphy as both Edward and William (his brothers) emigrated. My great grandfather passed the land to his own son William, who went missing in the 1930s and evetually on the death of Robert Dunphy in 1956, the land passed to my grandmother, Frances Dunphy, who sold it as she could not look after the land herself. That was the last of our land in that district connected to our family.

My own grandmother Frances Dunphy was the last Dunphy directly related to Edward and William. When  her brother went missing she apparently wrote to relatives in America seeking his whereabouts. If you possess any letters from my grandmother, I would be extremely grateful to see them. She missed him very much and never located him.

  • Bernadette,

Thank you for the information, and I'm sorry about your brother. I did these research a while ago. I love old document and find the history inside it. For privacy I omit some last names and details.   I found references of letters that Alice wrote to her younger brother Edward, inviting him to come to America and giving her address. I will ask around about these letters you had referred from your grandmother Frances.

My email, waldunphy@gmail.com, would be nice to exchange pictures, documents, and know more about family stories.

    Val
