My husband's great grandad Patrick Weston (???) ran the pound for the town?  He took care of the animals there which were impounded for taxes.  The family lived on a farm near the pound.  He was also a cobbler.

Also, his wife, Ellen Downing was one of 21 children.....her mother was a businesswoman and bought eggs from farmers around her and then sold them in town.  Supposedly her father sailed away to the US and passed away in Chicago.

I'd love to find where the family farm was.  And to locate more of this family.

We have gone to Killarney 5 times but have not been successful in locating anything beyond baptismal records.  They state the family Patrick and Ellen were married in Kilcumin. Several children were born in Ballydribbeen.

Thanks!

  • The pound is shown in the town on the c1890s map, just off Fair Hill and near the court house and Cattle market - see : Killarney town centre, Co. Kerry

The townland of Ballydribben is located just north of the town - see here  (c1840 OSI map)

Kilcummin parish is located to the north east of the parish of Killarney, and adjacent.

You may be able to to work out a more detailed location for the family within Ballydribben  townland using the records held in the Valuation Office, at Lwr. Abbey St., Dublin. They hold the Revalution Records aka Cancelled Land Books, which are similar in format to Griffith's and show when occupants and owners of property changed hands, and include site references like the Griffith's entries. In some areas these cover details up as far as the 1960s.

p.s. I dont see any sign of anyone named Weston/Whitson etc at Ballydribbeen on Griffith's so appears your Patrick and family moved there after the Primary Valuation took place here in 1853.

  • Thank you.  On one of our trips we went to the visitor center and they said they thought if anything the pound would be where the parking lot was adjacent but couldn't verify that.  I'll be contacting the Valuation Office to see what I can find.

From the location of Ballydribben and Kilcummin they must be very close.  I was able to use tax records to locate more about a Patrick Whestone. (Whiston..whatever) from the type of dog he liked (terrier) to the fact that he didn't vaccinate a child after a law went into effect.  Very interesting to learn these tidbits.
