Looking for information on William Murphy.  His birth is listed as July 1844 and he was christened the 3rd of August 1844 in the parish of Kilmacow..  His mother's maiden name was Dwyer.  He and his brother John immigrated to America around 1860.  They landed in New York.  William eventually settled in Lorberry and Tremont Pennyslvania.  John went south and then eventually to Cottage Grove, Minnesota.  Any information would be helpful, especially the names of his parents and family in Ireland.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The subscription site Roots Ireland has an 1844 baptismal record for William Murphy with mother Dwyer (see below). I also found the parents marriage record in 1832 and three other baptismal records. I assume there are more children. Did not see a record for John. I believe the family lived in Dunkiit townland in Dunkitt civil parish near Kilmacow.

The 1849 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing shows a James Murphy in Dunkitt townland.

I did not see any Murphys in Dunkitt townland in the 1901 census.

Let me know what questions you have.

  • Thank you for the information!.  William's first son was William J. Murphy.  A grandson was named James.  There was also a Thomas.  His first born daughter was Mary Margaret.  She was my great grandmother.  The names seem to follow family traditions of that time period.  William used Dwyer as his middle name.  I do not know if that was his birth name or not.  He used it from the US Civil War time on. Apparently there was another soldier named William Murphy so my William used his mother's middle name to distinquish the two of them.  Thank you again for providing the information on WIlliam!
