Hi, I have just discovered that my ancestor, Joseph Gardiner baptised 1818 in Castlecomer, to parents Patrick Gardiner and Mary Haydon, died in the Castlecomer Infirmary in 1900, and yet was buried in the Parish of Mallardstown in an unknown graveyard. I found this information from Rootsireland website. I cannot understand why he would be buried so far away from his home parish. Would you have any suggestions?
Thanks
Gary

Dear Gary
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in replying to your message.
Have you tried to contact the local history library to find details from the Board of Guardians Minutes that might explain this?

Hi Gary
I had fould relations who's deaths had been registered in Castlecomer (they lived in Loughill, Kilkenny) and like you per Rootsireland they were buried in Mallardstown. I could not understand this as the family already had a grave and headstone in Ballyouskill, Co Laois (Queens county) which was their parish and is only a couple of miles from them. I have an uncle living in that area who is very interested in history and he could not understand either as at that time cira 1897 - 1910 it would have taken days to go to Mallardstown. When I went back and looked at the inscription on the headstone in Ballyouskill I noticed that the timeline of the enteries. It was my greatgrand farther who should have put the deaths I was missing (his two daughters and sister) on the headstone and did not seem to have done so. My grandfather put his fathers name (d1933) followed by his mother who had died 34 years earlied (1899) on at the same time. So I am assuming that my grandfathers sisters and aunt who died in 1897, 1909 and 1910 where just never entered on the headstone. These are all listed on Rootsireland as been buried in Mallardstown, why I do no know but I think my theory makes more sense. I hope this helps you.

I just wrote a big posting and then atached a picture of this cemetery I took there a few weeks ago and it just loaded for a long time and then went Poof...gone...maybe timed out...who knows. So dont think my post took...but here is something I found online that lists graves there. However my ancestors who died 50 km away are not shown and I dont see Gardner, and I expect there are many more not listed. Many stones are unreadable, and most are very old. Yes its a big mystery why all these show burial there. FYI you cannot drive to this cemetery--it was built long before cars. It sits back a ways from the road and its VERY hard to find. If you want instructions on how to get there and a picture of the fence you have to open email me at newpeach@aol.com and I can send pics and info on finding it. Google maps is usually good but in that section of Ireland its useless.
