Hello Everyone, My name is Narelle from QLD Australia. I'm searching for any information on my 2nd great-grandmother's 1st husband William Wigmore. I know nothing about his life in Ireland. I would like to know if anyone can location his birth details, if he had any siblings and anything about his parents. He emigrated to Australia, I'm not sure of how and the date. He married my 2nd great-grandmother 03/01/1871 in Warwick QLD Australia, age 37. But he was arrested in 1872 for wife desertion and 1873 jail discharge record say his age was 36. So DOB could be from 1834-1837 birthplace Kilkenny Co.Kilkenny Ireland. I've lost his trail after 1873. I do have his wedding certificate I've attach. He stated his parents were Henry Wigmore and Mary Dining. Thankyou for your time.

  • A search of subscription sites  www.rootsireland.ie and  www.findmypast.ie for the surname Wigmore" in County Kilkenny was negative.

The name is mainly associated with Counties Waterford and Cork. The earliest record was on Roots for 1668 in Youghal, which is on the boundary of those two counties.

The surname "Dining is possibly "Dinan" which is common in County Cork.

  • Rell,

While this record from the subscription site www.rootsireland.ie  not agree with the information that was transcribed on the on the marriage record, there is a William Henry Wigmore born 8 May 1835 in the RC parish of Buttevant, Cork. His parents were William Wigmore, occupation listed as 60th "riffles" and Elizabeth Phelan. The sponsors were William Minorgan and Mary Guiton. Interesting that he was given a middle name, and it is the same one he gave for his father's first name.

Additionally, on Ancestry, there are seven birth records for his children with Frances Jane from the Australia Birth Index:

Mary Jane Elizabeth, 1871; William John, 1876; Alexander Paul, 1880; Maud Emily, 1883; John, 1886: Thomas, 1890; and Isabella, 1893.

    Regards,

  • Hi Carolyn, Thanks for your reply much appreciated. I'll look into your information on Cork.

Yes the Ancestry.com children birth records are registered as Frances Jane Robinson and William Wigmore's, but only Mary Jane Elizabeth is his. The other children belong to Frances's 3rd husband Alexander Poole. I believe with the time period that because Frances was still married to William Wigmore her children would've been registered with the husbands name. All Alexander's children dropped the Wigmore surname by the time they were married and used Poole. I think William Wigmore was a naught boy and any information he gave is to be taken with a grain of salt.
