My great grandfather, Tobias Byrne, was born in Tullowbrin, Kilkenny and baptised at St Johns, in 1852. He had three brothers ,Bryan, Edmond and William, all born in the1840s. They were the sons of Garrett Byrne and Eliza Butler, who were married in 1828. There were of course, several other children, including two girls, Ellen and Mary, born in the 1830s, who emigrated to Victoria, Australia. The four sons mentioned above ended up in Queensland, Australia (lured by gold it seems).

There was another son , Martin, and his record of baptism says he was baptised on Nov 6 1842.

I am trying to establish whether this was the same Martin who was living in Tullowbrin as per the Census of 1901 and 1911; although the dates don't match very well.

So basically I am trying to find out whether there are descendants of this Byrne family still around the area today.

I will be visiting Ireland in early May this year and would love to meet any relatives.

    Hello

A possible way to establish if Martin is related would be to find civil or church records of his marriage. They should provide a fathers name and the place he was resident at the time of his marriage.

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

Most Catholic records are held locally - One site which might be of use is - http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/ - where you can ‘browse’ an overview of available records per county. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for possible assistance.

    Best regards Michael.
