Hello!

I'm looking for a Catholic Church record of the marriage of James Furlong and Ellen or Nellie Pendergast/Prendergast/Pendergrast/etc in The Rower/Inistioge area between 1833 and 1843.  It may not have been a first marriage for either of them. James appears in the townland of Knockatore in The Rower parish on Griffiths in 1840.  James and Ellen had several children who can be found in The Rower/Inistioge Catholic parish register: Kyran in 1843; Anastatia in 1845; Edmund in 1850; and Eleanor in 1855; all born in the townland of Knockatore.

However, there were at leat 3 older children born to this couple: Mary circa 1837; James circa 1839; Thomas circal 1840 that I can't find in The Rower registers online as there is a gap in register births online between 1830 and 1840.

I would welcome some local help to find the marriage of James and Ellen - where and when and the witnesses and their parents if listed -  and the birth information on the 3 older children - and others I may not know of! - where and when and their sponsers.

James may have been from county Wexford origially according to family lore. Ellen dies in Knockatore in 1873 and was a widow according to Civil Records online; have been unable to find death record online for James.

Thank you for your help!!

  • Dear Karen

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I couldn't locate a marriage record for James and Ellen in a search between 1829 and 1848 - it would seem that this is not available. If the marriage took place in the 1830s there will be no record. You can see a list of record availability HERE. I haven't searched in Dublin though, but if you think this is a possibility you can search for free on irishgenealogy.ie Church records.  As you say, there are baptisms available for Kieran, Anastasia and Edmund and you can see the digitised originals at registers.nli.ie  - I think it's always nice to have a look at them, even if they don't yield anything more than you already know. You could take a look through the registers for the period of those earlier baptisms and see if there is a record of the children there that may have been missed by rootsireland.ie in its transcription.

Have you had a look at the Early Birth and Marriage Index yet? It is a good idea to keep an eye on it as it is updated regularly. Your ancestors might not appear now, but they may at a later date.

I hope someone with a connection to the family will be in touch. In the meantime, I wanted to invite you to add your ancestor's details to our XO Chronicles. You can learn more about it HERE and it might be another avenue to consider so that your ancestor's details can be seen by others.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Clare,

Thank you for your quick response and advice!  To your point, I will keep checking all the online sources as new data becomes available, hopeful that one day, the records I need appear.

Irishgenealogy.ie is my new favorite site!

I did see on John Grenham's site that the baptisms for Inistioge/Rower parish are missing for 1829-1840.  Any idea why that is?  Does this mean the records were lost or destroyed at the local parish?  Or, were they just not microfilmed?

As time permits, I will try to get my ancestor info into the Chronicles.  Of the children of James and Ellen I mentioned, Mary and Kieran left Ireland for Boston in 1873 and sister Eleanor followed circa 1885.  Brothers James and Thomas remained in Ireland and had large families, almost all of whom immigrated to the US between 1890 and 1905, settling in Massachusetts, Connecticut Chicago &  Peoria, Illinois, and a few disappeared, never to be seen or heard from again. Edmund (b 1850) and Anastatia (b 1845)  seemed to have died young - probably didn't survive the famine years.

    Thank you again!

    Karen

  • Hi Karne

It could be that the entries were lost or destroyed at the local parish or that they were taken as notes after the event, to be added to the main register and never made it that far - very frustrating!
