My great-grandmother, Sarah O'Connor, was born c. 1849 in Old Court, Clough, Co. Laois.  She was one of 7 children born to Michael O'Connor (from Coolacurragh) and Sarah Delaney (from Whitepark).  I have recently been to visit Clough and was thrilled to be able to find some 2nd and 3rd cousins (Anna Bergin, Aine Whelan, Celine O'Connor, and Maureen O'Connor (widow of Lally O'Connor).  I have never felt so welcome and my head is still spinning from the experience.  This is the first time that anyone in my extended family has ever made any contact with relations from Ireland (and we are nearly 100% of Irish heritiage).  So it was particularly meaningful.  Marianne and Sean Hyland (owners of the Foxrock Inn) were incredibly helpful, and I highly recommend staying there if you have research to do in the area!  I know that I will most certainly will be going back!

However, our work is not done!  We have much more to learn about the O'Connors and Delaneys of that area, so I thought I would post this message for some time in the future when Aghaboe parish gets involved in this project.

  • Hi there,

Could you please post your message here (Clough): http://www.irelandxo.com/group/bordwell-laois and here (Coolacurragh):http://www.irelandxo.com/group/coolkerry-laois

There are Roman Catholic church records available for these areas. Aghaboe (Ossory) date from 1795 for baptismal records and 1794 for marriage records. You can find these at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 5012, or the Church of Latter Day Saints, 0979700 item 1. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

You should also check the 1901/1911 census records for family members. You can check this here: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Hopefully, someone in the local community will recognise the name and be able to help you out trying to find living relatives.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney
