I am looking to connect with anyone interested in the history of the Mortimer family in County Laois. My GG grandmother, Ann Mortimer, was born in Camross about 1843, the daughter of Michael Mortimer and Catherine Phelan. Ann married James Walsh, a native of the Borris-in-Ossory area, and they emigrated to the US, settling in Troy, NY. Ann had several siblings also born in the Camross area in the 1840's and 1850's. Two brothers, Patrick and Matthew, and a sister, Margaret, also emigrated. Another brother, John, and a sister, Mary, remained in Ireland. John married Maria Bennett and had a large family, of whom there are many descendants in Ireland, England and Australia.
I will be visiting Laois in April, and would love to meet up with some cousins. I had the opportunity to connect with some of the family the last times I was in Ireland in the 1990's, but have lost touch with many of them now. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Brendan. I have all the basic materials on these guys- just looking to connect with some live relatives for a change. I have been at this for 20 years, so not many stones are unturned at this point. I see from your website you are a former Ancestry "Expert Connect" person- I am as well. I really missed that service when it went away, but it gave me a lot of practice and a launching pad to get started as a professional, and now I am doing it, if not full time, then enough of the time. I volunteer a lot helping people with their family history, and I get a lot of people who are interested in their Irish roots. I also give lectures and workshops around my local area (Albany, NY). Occasionally I have need of a professional genealogist based in Ireland to whom I can refer people I work with. Just yesterday I was advising a patron I was working with to hire someone to conduct research for him at the National Library. He is looking for County Kerry family- not easy records to work with. At any rate, if you have any samples of your work you could send me so I could take a look or use it for reference, I would realy appreciate it. I am affiliated with the Irish American Heritage Museum in Albany- feel free to pick my brain on any needs you might have in this area. My email address is lisagene@nycap.rr.com

Hi Lisa
I was surprised to see Camross mentioned as its not a place that I see very often. My grandparents were married in Camross church, he coming from Knocknagad and she from Coolrain. I also have numerous relatives buried in Camross churchyard and Henseys ( Hennessy) and Higgins still living in Knocknagad, Killeen and Cappanarrow.
No Mortimers anywhere that I,m aware of although one Hennessy G. Aunt did marry a Phelan.
My problem is the reverse- trying to find a g. Uncle who went to the States and seems to have disappeared without trace.
I hope you are lucky enough to meet some of your relatives
Good luck
Maria

Hi Maria,
Thanks for the note- Camross is definitely not a place that is very well known, but it's a lovely area. I've been to Coolrain as well- Sheeran's Pub is there. We met a couple of the Sheerans on one of our trips over. If you send me some particulars about the great uncle you are looking for information on, I might be able to do a little digging and see what I can come up in. Maybe his name, who his parents were, where he was born and when, any information about where he could have gone in the US and when he came over. I recently did something similar for a client in Chicago who was trying to trace 2 great uncles who came over from County Offaly and disappeared. I found one who died very young of TB, but could never find out what happened to the other one. I'd be happy to take a quick look for you. Who knows, we might get lucky.

Hi Lisa
Small world isn't it? My mother and aunt always said the Sheerans were cousins of ours and funnily enough a first cousin of my mother whom I met last year on my first visit to the States said the same thing but I've been unable to find a link.
As for the one that got away, I have all the info you mention so will look it out in the next day or so and forward it to you. Who knows we might get lucky.
Many thanks for the offer.

Hello Lisa,
My name is Helen Mortimer. I am now living in Co. Louth, Ireland but am originally from outside Roscrea in Co. Tipperary. Roscrea is about 25 miles from Camross. My mother Ellen Mortimer received information about your search from a friend and asked me to make contact with you. We both have a great interest in family history and we are always saying we will do something about checking it out but we have never got around to it!
My fathers name was Joe Mortimer originally from Bockagh (but this area is known to local people as Bacca). He passed away in 2003. He had three brothers - Michael, John and Stephen and one sister Marie. The are all dead now but have families in the area. Up until the nineties we had a farm not far from Bacca and more or less spent our summers there so we would know alot of people in the area. My grandfather was Daniel Mortimer (Bacca) who married Mary Ellen Maher from Ballaghmore. Daniels father was the John Mortimer you mentioned in your search. He did marry Maria Bennett often referred to as Mary. They had nine children - four boys and five girls. Daniel (my grandfather) was one of these.
My mother is a wealth of information and would love to meet you as would I if possible! Looking forward to hearing from you.
Best Wishes,
Helen Mortimer

Hello Lisa,
I am passing on details of another Mortimer family in Co. Laois which may or may not be of use to you and whom you may not have on your list. I do not know any of the family personally but happen to know where they live in a neighbouring parish to my own.
The name is: Patrick Mortimer,
Address: Cork Road, Stradbally, Co. Laois.
Stradbally is about 15 miles from Camross so the above Patrick maybe connected to the Camross Mortimers.
Best wishes,
Paddy Lacey, Ballyadams Parish Liasion for Ireland ReachingXO
