Hello,

I’m searching for information on the Tynan’s from Ballybrittas & Mountmellick.

From my research so it looks like some could have come from or moved to Tullamore in Co.Offaly.

Thanks in advance :-)

  • Hello Miriam,

Certainly, here we go.... I'm trying to confirm the children of John Tynan (1888-1951) and Ellen Walsh (1891-1947) - they were R.Catholic and the 1911 census places them in Emos, Queens County, Ireland, yet they both appear to have died in Tullamore, Co. Offaly. I can locate 4 children but I wonder if there are more.

I'm also looking for information about a William Tynan who I know married a Georgina White in 1937 in Tullamore, Co. Offaly. - together they had 3 children (I believe 2 boys and a girl). Both William & Georgina died young and I think I've found their death records but I can not find either of their birth records. Georgina died in 1957 aged 38. And William in 1951 aged 38. Both died in Tullamore, Co. Offaly. William's father was John Tynan and Georgina's father was Richard White.

I look forward to your reply.

    Thank you.

    Cheers

  • Hello Miriam,

Thank you so much for your detailed reply. I can not for the life of me find the Ancestry tree you mentioned - are you able to send it to me as a link? Unfortunately I can't order a certificate for him as I do not know his mothers birth name - as at the moment I can't work out WHICH William Tynan he is in my family tree. And yet I know there is a connection thanks to DNA.

    Cheers

  • No worries - thank you Miriam.

It would make sense if William was the son of John & Ellen - at his wedding with Georgina White one of the witnesses was Peter Tynan.

I'm in contact with a relative of Peter Tynan - so I will ask if he knew of another brother.

    Cheers

  • Chloe, my Grandfather was a Tynan born in Ballybrittas - Joseph a Tynan. They owned a Pub/Grocery Shop in Ballybrittas called Tynans. My Great Grandfather was Thomas Tynan and was a TD in the Dail. What is your connection to the Tynan's?

  • My grandmother was a Julia Tynan from Ballybrittas, she was one of 9 children, born around 1898/99.

Her parents were Anthony and Bridget Tynan.  She married Thomas Michael Whelan at Emo in 1919.  I don't have much information on him but I believe he was born in

Maryborough around 1896 and his father was also Thomas.

My grandfather died in Melbourne Australia in 1940's and my grandmother in the 1960's.

A lot of the Tynan descendants still live in the Ballybrittas and Emo area.

  • Hello,

I am the great, great grand-daughter of John Tynan and I believe Bridget Keegan.  Their son, also named John, is my great grandfather.  He married Alice Woods and their daughter, Christina is my grandmother.

I would love to know about them.  I do have some information and records but I am looking for more!

If anyone knows anything, I would love to swap information.

    Thanks.

  • Hello Annmarie:   When i check my records; I see that John Tynan and Bridget Keegan had (6) sons; in order of birth:

    Joseph Tynan 6-23-1861

    Laurence Tynan 6-22-1862

    Mat Tynan 11-1-1866

    John Tynan 4-4-1869 (your connection)

    William Tynan 5-7-1871

Charles Tynan 11-1-1874 (yes same as Mat)

For one child (Laurence) the mother's name is "Teresa" - that may have been her middle name.

The "Joseph" name for oldest son - suggests that John Tynan that married Bridget Keegan - had Father named Joseph.

That depends on whether they followed Irish naming convention.

The above mentioned Avril Tynan and Aileen are both my Cousins; they both are descendants of Thomas Tynan (1871-1953).

I am a descendant of Patrick J. Tynan (1867-1936). Patrick is my Great Grandfather.  He immigrated to the United States; Middletown. CT.    My Patrick and their Thomas were brothers; because there are many different Tynan families - I refer to our family as the "Ballybrittas-Jamestown" Tynan family. There other Tynan families in the area; Courtwood, Emo, Vicarstown, Pikes of Rushall, etc.  The Census of family names in Co. Laois (Pender's) has 20+ Tynan families counted in the late 1600's.  I assume our family is one of those.  Our family is primarily buried at St. Johns of Killenard; our GG Grandfather (Thomas Tynan 1820-1885) and GGG Grandfather (William Tynan 1778-1854).

I tried looking up marriage of your John Tynan and Bridget Keegan in Civil Records on line; nothing came up as I had to assume it was at least 1860; Civil Marriage records start in mid 1860's...Father and Mother's names are usually listed.

    Regards from New York....Tom Tynan
