  • Dear James my name is Sarah Haslam, My Haslam family are from PortLaoise. My Granmother gave me some details regarding the Haslam Family and I wonder if our Joseph Haslam from Ballymacker. My information is as follows from local historian Mr.Edward Boylan who gave the information to Rev.Thomas Browne of St Joseph's Church ,Portlaiose ( Portlaoighise ).

My gran was researching our Haslam Family back in the sixties circa 1964.She was also in contact with an American cousin, James Haslem

Our Joseph Haslam had Ballymacker (7 acres ) and his brother Henry Haslam ( my family ancestor ) had Ballymony ( 18 acres ) from their Father Henry Haslam from Cloneagh.Their mother was a Harris, I dont know her first name .

According to my gran's notes Joe Haslam only had daughters in his family, the Byrne Family married into Joe Haslam Family.Joe Haslam wife was an Ellen Harris , I wonder if she was a cousin as his mother was a Harris.

I hope this helps ,I may have the completely wrong Joe Haslam , but I was curious as he was from Ballymacker as was my Joe Haslam.I am unsure of dates of birth etc, I am slowly piecing the info together from my gran , who passed on the details to me last week.

    Feel free to contact me

  • Hi  Sarah,

My Great Uncle was John HASLAM, born Maryborough, c1847. He moved to Manchester and married my GAunt Kate (Catherine) Gorman in 1866 and worked as a Cotton Mill Overseer. He had two children - Mary (b1868) and Henry (I note there is a Henry in your family) - known as Harry (b.1869). On John's marriage certificate his father is given as Edward Haslam - an ironmonger. I have looked for John's birth in The RC registers but no record. I wondered if he may have been CoI (he is buried in a Municipal Cemetery in Swinton, Manchester - not an RC plot). Just wondered if you have come across a John Haslam in your family records?

    Kind regards,

    Michael Gorman
