My great grandfather Cornelius McKiernan came to the U.S. about 1860. He was born about 1840. I believe this Boston Pilot ad is his: http://infowanted.bc.edu/record/?recid=27743 Cornelius and his brother Patrick lived and worked in nearby Chelsea, Mass. The ad indicates sisters Mary and Catherine. I'm not sure if the 47 means Catherine came in 1847. Patrick marries Bridget Coyne and Cornelius marries Mary Reilly. I don't know if they knew their wives in Ireland. Their marriage certificates give their parents as Thomas McKiernan & Peggy Darcy or Dorsey. Neither of them an read or write. Cornelius works as a teamster. Assuming I'm correct about the ad being his, do I have any cousins in Augharan today? Can anyone tell me more about my great grandfather before he came to the U.S.?

    The online Irish phonebook  http://www.eircomphonebook.ie/#   lists one McKiernan in Agharann currently. You can check the site for the info. For privacy reasons, we do not provide this information on the message board. Make sure you hit the Residential Tab when you search and just like in the USA only a percentage of phone users are in the phonebook.

    Some other comments: the 47 does mean 1847.

    I also checked the 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Cloone parish and there were many Kiernan/McKiernan entries and at least six in Agharann. I did not see any Thomas entries which may mean he was deceased by 1857.

    There were also eight Kiernan/McKiernan households in Agharann in the 1901 census.

    I did a quick check of the Roots Ireland indexes and could not locate a Cornelius McKiernan/Kiernan baptismal record father Thomas from 1835-1845. There were three churches in the area. One of the churches did not have records back to 1840.
