I've spent a lot of time looking at the 1901 census with no success with locating your family. I'm wondering if Anne was ill in 1901 (since she died in 1902) and the children were dispersed when the census was taken. I did find a 5 year old Mary living with her grandparents in the next parish over from Cloonlogher. Let me know what additional information that you may have.

I did find the death index records for Anne and Michael. If you are interested in getting copies, you need to write to the GRO www.groireland.ie  Fill out their form and provide the quarter/year of death, registration district (Manorhamilton) and the volume and page number ( Anne 2 and 156) (Michael 2 and 162). Copies cost around 4 euros each and you can use a credit card. Michael's will tell you where he was living in 1918.

I'm not sure how but I think we are related. My Grandmother was Marie McGowan (her maiden name) and she had a Brother named Michael McGowan and a sister Annie.  She also had a brother that died that I didn't know.  My Aunt Annie came to America on the Titanic and survived. She was actually born in Pennsylvania then my Great Grandparents went back to Ireland.  My Grandmother Marie came to America when she was about 20 years old and came to Cleveland Ohio where she stayed with her Cousins the McDonald's and then met my Grandfather who's name was Thomas Pasco. They settled in Madison Ohio and she never saw her parents again.  Aunt Annie settled in Chicago and visited often. Somehow we have to be related but I'm not sure how

Hello. I don't know how i missed this message. Thank you  for your research thus far. My great Grandmother Anne McGowan died Dec. 25th, 1902..I believe while giving birth to her son Francis, who died August 19, 1905.She was born in 1870.  Her husband Michael  was born in 1861 and died Aug. 24th, 1918. That is all I have except my grandmother Mary McGowan was born Aug 11, 1896 in ManorHamilton.

Again, sorry for delay..my children keep me busy. I am still planning to come over in mid October.

Hello..I  am surprised someone actually replied. My  maternal grandmother Mary McGowan was Michaels daughter. She came to NY in 1824, I found the manifest listing. She died before I was born. I don't have alot of information on her, as my parents have also passed. I had visited Ireland last June and felt a connection as both my Grandmothers were from there. I  know the McGowan's are from ManorHamilton Co. Leitrim . My cousin here had visited them in leutrim , but 20 years ago. she never kept in touch. I am planning a trip in October and have been on the geneology sites. I believe you and I would be 3rd cousins. I live in Stafford Township NJ..

I will keep you posted in my quest..

My maiden name is McGowan. My father was Donald Harold McGowan now deceased. His father was Harold McGowan they lived in Newville, PA. We've always tried to find ancestors from Ireland and find out about our heritage. All of us have Red hair and green eyes or black hair and blue eyes and have practiced Protestant faith. I do know that McGOWAN, Katherine, (42). parished on the Titanic on its maiden voyage.My grandmother's name was Mary Katherine but her last name was Deihl.

I was told that my family came over at Ellis island but that's where it all stops. I have no surviving McGowan family members that are older to ask. So any help would be appreciated.

I just happened to see your comment as part of this message thread. Ellis Island records start in 1892 and can be found at ellisisland.org 

Can you provide any details of a family member who was born in Ireland and their parents names? Possibly we can locate a baptismal record which would help pinpoint a location. McGowan was primarily found in Sligo and Leitrim but also found in Northern Ireland.

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

Thank you for replying. I've heard of the DNA testing but, honestly never knew which one was truly the most accurate. I have a friend who's entire family and ancestors were born in Greece and acestory.com told her she was native American.

So I've been a bit skiddish about the process. However, I'm sure they're not all the same so I will try it and see what I find. Like I said before, I've tried getting as much information as I could from what family I have left and really they're where I am with knowledge.

It's hard not knowing Something.

The two major DNA testing companies are Ancestry DNA and Family Tree DNA. I have tested with both companies. Ancestry asks you to add some saliva to a vial and Family Tree asks you to swab your inner cheeks. Both painless.

Around Mother's Day both companies should have specials. The test you want for Family Tree is the Family Finder test.

Although Ancestry has a bigger data base of DNA samples, I prefer Family Tree. They have better analytical tools and your matches respond back at a higher rate.

Ancestry has the advantage of having  family trees tied to the testing result but many people keep their trees private and many do not respond to e-mails. A lot of Ancestry people take the test just to see their ethnicity and are not interested in trying to connect with possible relations.

Hi I'm a mcgowan, father seamus mcgowan born 1946 from manor Hamilton he was one of many siblings he moved to the UK some of his family stayed in Ireland others went around the globe including Australia. His mother was called Mary.

My grandfather was Patrick McGowan. He was born in Manorhamilton in 1867, the son of Francis McGowan and Margaret (Gallagher) McGowan. He was the youngest of at least 6 brothers and sisters. He came to the US in 1884 when he was 17 years old. His older sister, Anne, was already here and at least 3 brothers followed him: Francis, Terry, and John. His parents, a sister Margaret, and a brother Michael stayed in Manorhamilton. His brother Terry eventually returned to Ireland. There may have also been a sister Rose who remained in Ireland, but her two daughters, Rose and Magdalene came to the US. They all settled in Brooklyn. Patrick married Ellen Wallace in January of 1903 and they had five children. My mother, Mary McGowan was the youngest. The older ones were Francis, John, Margaret, and Ellen. 

It seems all the McGowan's recycled names, but there is a chance your Grandparent could be the daughter of my great uncle Michael who remained in Ireland. I say a "chance" because there are numerous Michael McGowan's in Lietrim and I am only guessing at dates for the brothers and sisters. Do you know if your Grandmother's Grandparents were Francis and Margaret? I believe Francis and Margaret Gallagher were married in Manorhamilton in 1845 or 46.

I am going to Ireland this week and plan to visit Manorhamilton. I don't expect to knock on doors searching for relatives. I really don't have enough info to track them down. But maybe I can glean some additional info.

Hello Ginny. I'm sorry I never saw this post. But I'm working hard at the genealogy. I joined Ancestry and had the DNA test. I came up 76% Irish/Scotch...anyway. I think my great grandfather Michael McGowan could be the son of your great grandfather? He was born in 1861 in Manorhamilton. He died 8/24/1918...that's all I got.
I just located the # for the GRO in Dublin. I will be calling there Monday..I'm actually headed over on the 4th thru 18th and hope to find his grave and lay flowers. My grandmother came over from Cobh to Ellis Island ..so we ended up in NJ..I never met her but I long to find connections in Ireland.

I want to make sure you are aware that many of the civil records are now online at the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie  I know when you and I corresponded back in 2013 the records were not online and you had to write to the GRO.

Thanks a million for that info. I'm having a hard time reading where he died. I am heading over in 3 days. Hoping to get more info before I go. My other great grandfather was from Limerick. I went to the Church and they have records of my grandmothers baptism and her 11 siblings..but nothing after that. What would you suggest I try next there?

The place name on the death record looks like Farrabar which does not appear to be a townland but likely a local place name.

On your Limerick family, not sure of the years of birth for you grandmother and siblings. 1901 and 1911 census records are available and then the civil marriage and death records on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie
