HESLIN - JACKSON - KEEGAN - McCABE - BARTLEY

We know next to nothing about our  HESLIN ancestry.  We know they came from Aughavas, Mohill and we have parents' names & the names of children from them.  All other information we're pretty much in the dark on.

Peter HESLIN & Mary JACKSON had 4 children that we know of, all daughters, one of whom, Mary Agnes, is our ancestor.  We don't know who Peter or Mary's parents were nor when Peter & Mary married.

We've only been able to find baptisms for 2 of the 4 daughters in the FHL film 1279224 - Baptisms Gortletteragh.

One of the daughters we don't have a baptism for, Mary, we do know her DOB because she married Bartley Thomas aka Bartholemew KEEGAN - see my prior post "John KEEGAN Family Mohill > Rhode Island abt. 1873."

The 2 daughters we have baptisms for are Bridget bapt. 9 Feb 1884 & Sarah bapt.  19 Apr 1888.  Mary, as mentioned is our ancestor & we know her DOB which was 28 Oct 1882.  Rose, the 4th daughter we know absolutely nothing about other than her name.

Rose & Sarah remained in Aughavas while Mary & Bridget came to the US.

Rose, as mentioned, we know nothing about other than she stayed in Aughavas.

Sarah we know a bit about from a descendant of her son who came to the US.  Sarah married on 8 Jan 1917 Mohill to Patrick McCABE (FHL film 1279224).  We only know of one son, Bernard who came to the US and stayed briefly in North Providence with his cousin Mary KEEGAN nee HESLIN & her family before he moved and settled in New York City where he married & had a daughter.  He died there 12 Nov 1963.  We don't know anything else about Sarah.

Bridget & Mary came together to the US in 1904 sailing on the SS Cretic from Queensland on 14 Oct and arriving in Boston, Massachusetts on 22 Oct.  They reported on the ships manifest that their contact whom they would be staying with in the US was their cousin, James BARTLEY who lived in the City of Providence, RI.

After a brief stay in RI, Bridget continued on to California settling in San Francisco where she married twice & was widowed twice.  We know nothing about either husband beyond name.

Her first husband was Peter SWEENEY.  She married 2nd to John KELLY.  Bridget had no children by either husband.  We don't know when Bridget died other than it was sometime in the 1960's.

To recap Mary from the previous post, she was b. in Aughavas 28 Oct 1882 & d. 3 Nov 1964 in Cranston, Providence Co, RI.

On 3 Oct 1912, she married Bartley Thomas aka Bartholemew KEEGAN in Providence, Providence Co, RI.  The lived in North Providence, Providence Co, RI and had 3 daughters & a son.  Only one child, a daughter, married.  She had 3 children.  All married but only one had children, 2 daughters.

We would love to find out more about the HESLIN family Bridget & Mary left behind in Aughavas.

You could go online to various Irish genealogy sites and seek out more info (am not going to list them, there's too many now but the gathering website would be a start as they are promoting find your roots I believe). There's also searching the many records on ancestry.com including ships manifests, local BMD info, street directories (if any of them went into a profession?), the 1901 and 1911 Irish censuses for relevant townlands to ascertain who was left behind... etc etc Griffiths valuation c1850s if they want to go further back and various other census substitutes for period 1830-1901. also findmypast.ie a competitor genealogy outfit based in Trinity start up business  There is a Leitrim Roots Festival being run in September: check out info on the Gathering Website.... maybe not much help to you but if you can establish any local inhabitants I would be happy to try and put you in touch!Helen

  • Hi Helen,

    ?

    ?

Nice to hear from you. I've covered all the easy stuff with these people - Ancestry, Family Search, Leitrim-Roscommon Genealogy site and any free sites pertaining to this section of Ireland. I've shied away from the paywall Irish sites simpley because my monetary resources aren't that great & I can't afford to use them.

    ?

    ?

Unfortunately, on the 1901 & 1911 censuses, I'm not finding a match for Peter HESLIN or wife Mary JACKSON.

    ?

    ?

And the family was no longer intact by 1901 so the Rose HESLIN"S I've found could be the daughter Rose of Peter & wife Mary but with only knowing her name, having not found a baptism for her so therefore no clue on a birth year I've nothing to help me decide which, if any, of the Rose"s is Peter & Mary HESLIN's daughter. The same goes for daughter Sarah.

    ?

    ?

As for the two who came to the US, I've found probable matches on the 1901 census but the ages are off a wee bit.

    ?

    ?

Daughter Mary isn't a problem since she is an ancestor.

    ?

    ?

Daughter Bridget, on the other hand, I doubt I'll ever find. She had no children to look for and there are enough Bridget & Peter SWEENEY/SWEENY"s and Bridget & John KELLYPatrick McCABE/KELLEY"s in the San Francisco area in the right age groups to make one's head spin. I've no point of reference with regard as to when husband #1 Peter SWEENEY died nor do I know anything about him regarding parents, siblings, his birth year, occupation for a possible city directory search - nada. The same goes for Bridget's 2nd husband John KELLY.

    ?

    ?

Periodically, I'll ask about when Bridget died not so much that I look for a specific DOD but if someone could remember something that is easy to date such as "that was the year aunt so & so fell & broke her hip" or "that was the year cousin so & so graduated from college" or "that was the year we bought our first sporty type automobile". Something like that would help in possibly finding Bridget's death but so far, memories of other events that occurred around the time Bridget died, are dim.

    ?

    ?

Basically, we know little to nothing of Peter HESLIN, wife Mary nee JACKSON or their daughters Sarah who married Patrick McCABE in 1917 & Rose for whom we have just a name. We also don't know what townland the HESLIN"s were from. And, knowing so little, resources such as Griffiths & the other census substitutes are of little use. The best I can do with them is compile a list of possibilities which I've already done but I've nothing to narrow down that list & lead me to an eventual ancestor.

    ?

    ?

I checked out the Leitrim Roots Festival site but so far there's not much there. All the Genealogy sections say "Coming Soon" and the blog is very quite with the last posting there back in Oct 2012. I'll keep an eye on it though since one would expect that they'll get some of the pages developed, hopefully by June.

    ?

    ?

My best hope, since I know so little will be if famikly in Leitrim gets involved in this site, sees & recognizes the people in my post and gets in touch with me.

    ?

    ?

Thanks again for the suggestions & the heads-up on the Leitrim Roots Festival.
