Patrick S. Wren (1825-1898) and Annie Murray (1829-1901) emigrated during the Famine years of the 1840s to NYC, where they had 12 children, 5 of whom survived to adulthood (William Henry, Jane, Annie, James E., and Francis P.)

Annie Murray was the daughter of John Murray and Catherine Hackett and the records of Bornacoola Parish indicate a Eugene Murray with the same parents baptized in 1830. Living in the same NYC apartment building with the Wrens were 2 Geelan sisters, who were also baptized in Bornacoola and as their mother was a Hackett living in Rooskeynamona with her Geelan husband, it is assumed they were cousins of Annie Murray Wren.

It is not known where in Leitrim, Patrick Wren originated or whether their marriage took place in Ireland or NYC. Wren presents the usual difficulties of spelling and while normally it is found as Wren, it has also been seen in reference to this family as Renn, Reen, Rinn, and Wrenn.

  • Apologies 4 years late, Emma, for not replying to your message - guess I was just posting to see if anyone else was researching the same folks. My Murrays seem to have lived in either the townland of Keelagh or Meelragh in 1830 when Eugene was christened. In the Tithe Aplotments from circa 1830 the only Murrays in Bornacoola Parish seem to be Brian, John, and Michael Murray of Clooncarreen (Clooncarn), whom I surmise may wind up the Murrays of nearby Tulcon who were connected to James Joyce (his grandfather being a John Murray) who was a native of Tulcon or so I have read.

Fenagh seems to be the closest place to Mohill where there was a concentration of Wrens but thus far I have been unable to zero in on exactly where in Leitrim Patrick S. Wren hailed from.

    Warm Regards,

    Ed Stewart
