I am searching for information about ancestors who came to the US from Abbeyfeale, Limerick, in the mid-1800's

My direct ancestor is Catherine Collins, born perhaps 1840-1843, died 1883 in Washington, DC.  I believe she came to the US on a cattle boat with her siblings Ellen and Patrick.  Her sister Ellen may have met her own husband Daniel Collins on the boat.  They may have landed in Philadelphia or Baltimore.

Catherine Collins met and married Daniel Curtin, 1821-1886, of Washington, DC, and they had 9 children.  Their son John Thomas, 1868-1928, was my grandfather, my mother Loretta's father.

Several decades ago my cousin Paul Collins traced the Collinses to Abbeyfeale, but I do not have the details of his research.

If anyone can help with information about these Collinses who lived in Abbeyfeale in the 1800's, I would be grateful.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked the Abbeyfeale baptismal records on Roots Ireland and there are a good number of Catherine, Patrick and Ellen Collins baptismal records around 1840. Do you possibly have their parents names so we can find their baptismal records?

  • Hi Eileen

We might be on the same track.

We believe our Mary Collins (1834-1898) migrated to Australia in 1850 with the Earl Grey scheme. She is my husband's 3xgreat grandmother. In Australia Mary had a difficult life and we want to honour her by acknowledging her family in Ireland.

In addition to Collins, names like McCarthy, Barry, Harnett, Sweeney, Lenihan, and Cronin keep coming up with DNA matches, as does the village of Abbeyfeale. These families might have intermarried, which will make our research just that little more challenging.

Have you done a DNA test? If so, with what company?

    Kind regards, Sandy.

  • Hi

My grandfather Maurice Collins emigrated to America in1929. He landed in NY on September 2. He was the oldest of 7 children. His mother Catherine Collins died in child birth when he was 11. His father James Collins was the town builder and his younger brother Jimmy was the post master. None of his siblings came to America. I am trying to determine how far back our American roots extend. My grandfather died in 1994 at the age of 86.

  • My ancestor, Daniel Collins was born in parish Abbeyfeale in 1835. I haven't found the names of his parents yet. Several DNA matches from this line are on Ancestry, but all that I've found are living in the US.

He and his brothers went to the US in the 1850's. Here is the info I have on each, in case it matches anyone else's tree:

Daniel Collins, born Abbeyfeale Limerick 1835. By 1856 he was in the US, living in the Irish section of Knoxville, Kent, East Tennessee. Married on April 15, 1863 to Mary Ann McCarthy (1840-1919) of Ireland. His eldest son was named John, born in TN. By 1865 they were living in Iowa City, Iowa.  Daniel passed away in 1905 and is buried in Old St. Joseph Cemetery.  His other children in Iowa: Daniel William, Timothy, Johanna, Elizabeth, Helen (Nellie), Mary, Denis Francis, David Franklin.

John Collins: born Abbeyfeale ~1828. Moved to USA in 1850s. Was in Ohio around or before 1854.  Married Mary Lyons Jun 16, 1860 in Johnson County, Iowa. Passed away in Davenport, Iowa in Jan 1909, buried in Old St Joseph Cemetery. The children mentioned in his obit are Elizabeth Collins-Flynn (b. 1861) and Catherine "Cassie" Collins-Cummings (b 1865).

Denis Collins: born Abbeyfeale in 1820's. Went to the USA in 1850s. First was in Virginia around 1853, then in Knoxville Tennessee in 1860. That's the last record I could find for Denis.

David Collins: born Abbeyfeale between 1835- 1839. Went to USA in 1850s. Married Bridget Scanlon July 12 1863 in Iowa City.

Thomas Collins: born Abbeyfeale. Was in Virginia, USA in 1853/1854. Lived in Knoxville, TN in 1860 census.

William Collins: born Abbeyfeale. Went to Ohio around or before 1855.

Batt Collins: born Abbeyfeale. Went to Sidney, Ohio around or before 1855.

If anyone else has done DNA test on Ancestry, let me know so we can check if our various Collins from Abbeyfeale match.
