I am searching for information about my great grandmother Ellen O’Neill and her family the O’Neill’s. Ellen was born abt 1858 in Abbeyfeale, Limerick, Ireland and died 5 Nov 1938 in Surrey England. I do not have her birth or baptism records. She was still living in Abbeyfeale, Limerick at the time of her marriage in 1882.
Ellen married Michael Goulding 28th August 1882 at The Catholic Church of St Michael, Limerick. Their marriage certificate states her father was Michael O’Neill who was a weaver.
Michael Goulding was from Fermoy Co. Cork at the time of his marriage and worked for Inland Revenue.
Michael Goulding was born abt 1859 in Cahirciveen Resident, Kerry, Ireland and died 22nd Oct 1924 in Hertfordshire, England
Michael and Ellen had 6 children (Michael, Patrick (my grandfather), William, Margaret, Eily and Teresa). They linked their surnames for their children ie Patrick William O’Neill Goulding (who was my grandfather). I’m not sure if this was common practice at the time or this linking of the surnames had some other significance.
I am looking for any records about my 2 times Great Grandfather Michael O’Neill his wife and their family
The only record I have been able to find of Michael O’Neill is on his daughter’s marriage certificate.
I have been able to source information on Ellen and Michael through English census records, and probate records.
I have searched on ancestry.com.au and familysearch.org but have been unsuccessful at finding any further information.
Thank you for any assistance.
Regards for Australia
Kathleen

Kathleen:
You may want to try www.rootsireland.ie This is a pay site but based on this link it appears that Abbeyfeale church records are included back to 1829.

Thank you Roger
I did take your advice and found one baptism in the year search 1855 - 1859 for 1855 Ellen O'Neill (who was born abt 1857) father Michael O'Neill however it was for Mitchelstown Co Cork (not Abbeyfeale Limerick). The priest noted that parish was Brigown and Marshalstown. It looks as if I'll have to go a bit more homework before I know for sure if this is my great grandmother.
Any other hints would be much appreciated.
Regards from down under,
Kathleen

Hi Kathleen
Searching Griffiths Valuation gives two results for the spelling of Goulding as follows
But this is for a Michael Goulding from Killemlagh and Patrick Goulding from Killorglin.
However search the Kerry church records online at http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/
will give various spelling options for Goulding.
Searching through Griffiths Valuation for Abbeyfeale gives, Patrick Neil, Main St Abbeyfeale, 1852.
In 1901 Census for Abbeyfeale gives following results for O Neill
Now these may not be related to your family.
Without a townland name within Abbeyfeale area and Caherciveen region we will have difficulty taking this search further.
Could you check the record you have to see if there is a townland name mentioned on any of them.
I look forward to hearing from you, sorry I could not be of more help.

Hi Kathleen
We across this today, Slatter's directory 1881, it list a Michael O Neill weaver for Abbeyfeale.
Now this may or may not be your Michael O'Neill but dates seem to fit. Ellen O'Neill born about 1858, her father still a weaver 20 odd years later.

Thanks so much - I'm claiming him! There does not seem to be too many Michael O'Neills around at that time who fit the facts as I know them. And according to Google, Listowel is abt 16 kilometers apart from Abbeyfeale.
Do you know if it was common to join surnames as my great grandparents did for their children?
Thanks again
Kathleen

Hi Again
No information on how common it was, or the reason to have double surnames at that time.
What is the family connection to Listowel ?
If you are searching for relatives in Co Kerry (Listowel, Co. Kerry) look up following website
http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ select church records.
This is free website, a recent initiative to place church records online.
