Searching for Great Grandfather, William Hartnett/Harnett. I believe he was born in Athea and later moved to Abbeyfeale. William came to US Philadelphia, PA in 1883 and there, married Mary O'Connell from Newtownsands, Kerry. I heard he returned home to Ireland and have found him on a ships manifest (Iberion) bound for Queensland through Liverpool, late April 1914, scheduled to arrive in early May. Wondering if there was any official documentation required for an Irish citizen returning home. Passports were not required yet. Thought such information may provide a forwarding address. Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.

A William Harnett was born in the parish of Athea on 1 July 1852 to Patrick Harnett and Mary Woulfe, as per a transcription on RootsIreland.
About the passenger records--you may find him on a list of passengers coming into the U.S. As far as documentation on the Irish end, I am not aware of any.
I hope this helps.Patricia

Thank you for your quick response. Yes, I have William's birth info. He lived in the US for 30 years, but returned to Ireland permanently in 1914. Looking for where he finally settled.

Hello Millie
I was reading your appeal for information and have found the record shown below, however the date is a little adrift to what you are showing, however it may help you to investigate further.
I ahve also found a death entry for the same name in Newcastle - normally this means Newcastle West, which is the main town from Abbeyfeale; However please be careful about using this information without thoroughly checking as the name Harnett along with William is numerous in this area.
I am a volunteer from Killeedy/Tournafulla which is a village next to Abbeyfeale and then Athea - would you like me to put a request for any knowledge about your William on our village facebook page as these other towns do have a link to the page and you may hit lucky?
