Hi, I'm looking for connections with Denis Edwards/McMahon (used both surnames as did his children) who married Honorah Stokes and lived with their children in the Askeaton area in the mid-1800s. There are four known children born between the 1840s-60s - Michael, Margaret, unknown and Denis. The latter son Denis is our line. I've not been able to find anything on the senior Denis either his baptism or parents or what happened to his other children. A possible relative in Askeaton for the baptism of Michael was Mary Edwards. The Stokes side may be from Croagh.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The RC records for Askeaton parish start in 1829 https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0860 Croagh baptismal records start in 1836. https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0880

So I think it is unlikely that a baptismal record is available for either Denis or Hanora. I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and found a possible marriage record for Denis and Hanora. It was in Croagh which makes sense since the bride was from Croagh. The marriage record shows Denis Stokes and Hanora Stokes. My guess is that the priest made a mistake when he wrote the names in the register. I didn 't find any more baptismal reocrds other than the four you have already. I checked the Askeaton parish register for the no name record and the priest did leave the name blank.

    Date of Marriage:30-Jan-1845
    Parish / District:CROAGH
    County:Co. Limerick
    Husband  DenisStokes
    Wife HanoraStokes

I checked the 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Askeaton civil parish and there was a Denis McMahon in Cragmore townland.Likely this is your Denis. https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/limerick/askeaton.htm

  • Thanks, Roger

I have that information too but great to confirm that nothing else can be found. We have a YDNA link to the late 1600s confirmed with matched descendants in the USA but the 100+ years in between that is our particular line of descent in Ireland, is missing, unfortunately.

    kind regards
