Seeking information about my great grandfather, Daniel Trahey (1832-1903), age 22, who immigrated to Detroit, Michigan 1849 with a John age 20  and Mary Trahey age 21.

 

I have pieced together that he ( Daniel)  was related to Thomas Francis Treahy/Trehy/Tracey etc ( 1806-1872) who immigrated through Canada to Detroit about 1832, married Ellen Cannane 1833, and had at least 7 or as many as 14 children there. Oral history of a great grandson of Thomas F. Treahy says that he came from the Foynes area.  Other data suggests he was from Lismarkeery.

Thomas Francis Treahy may have been related to Bartholomew Treahy (1782- ) of Askeaton, Limerick, who married Bridget Moran. He  immigrated to Canada and is found in the 1861 Canada census age 79 years. Batt Treahy is also found in the 1827 Tithes in Lismarkerry.

Family records from descendents of Thomas Francis Treahy given to me include a pencil-sketched family tree showing 6 sons of a Trehy of Foynes: Edw., Daniel, Michael 1800, Wm 1790-1868, Thomas 1806-1872, and James. I believe I have found Detroit records for 3 of them...Michael, William, and Thomas F..

This same sketched tree shows that Daniel Trehey/Treahy/Trahey married Mary McGraw and had 2 sons, Edw and Daniel, Jr. I believe my great grandfather was this Daniel, Jr.( 1832-1903) son of Daniel and probably nephew of Thomas Francis Treahy. Daniel Jr and all of his family are buried in the Thomas Treahy plot at Mt. Elliott in Detroit along with most of Thomas F's children and their spouses.

Is it possible that records could be found which would confirm Daniel Treahy/Trahey and Thomas Francis Treahy to Askeaton?

    I looked on the Roots Ireland indexes for a baptismal record for Daniel Trahey around 1832. The only record I located was for a Daniel Trahey (or possibly variant spelling) in 1828 in the Shanagolden RC church records. The parents were James and Johanna. 

    For reference purposes Shanagolden records start in 1824 and Askeaton in 1829. Shanagolden is the RC parish immediately to the west of Askeaton. 

    This summer the National Library plans to put the RC parish registers online for free searching. At that time you can look at the Askeaton records to see what you can locate.

    Many thanks for searching for baptismal records for Daniel Trahey. The record you located in Shannagolden could quite possibly be his as  documents I have found about him contain various dates for his birth and age.  Thank you!

    Also, thanks for the information about the RC parish register plans for the National Library this summer. I'll keep an eye out and hopefully their online records will find some Trahey/Treahy family in Askeaton also.

    I also looked for recordsd for John and Mary around 1830 and the results are inconclusive.

    There were three Johns in the indexes from 1827-1833 and two were in Shanagolden church.

    John 1828 parents Patrick and Maria

    John 1830 parents John and Johanna

    I also looked for Mary from 1825-1835 and only found one record in 1833 for a Mary with parents Stephen and Johanna. The baptism was in St. Michaels church in Limerick city.

    I guess you will need to wait until the records are online to see if you can find your ancestors. It is possible that the surname was mistranscribed by Roots. The letter "T" is always tricky.
