I am looking for ancestors or relatives of my great great grandfather Daniel Leahy. Any help would be greatly appreciated
He was born in Bruff, Limerick in about 1800 (date not known), joined the army in 1823, married Mary Hyland in Dublin in 1828 and was posted (as a guard!) to a convict ship the Lord Melville in 1830. He arrived in Sydney in 1930 and his wife Mary and son John (born Chatham 1830 - my great grandfather) either travelled with him or joined him in Sydney. Daniel and Mary's second child Mary Elizabeth was born in 1833 and baptised (as a Roman Catholic) on 14 July 1833. Daniel was travelling with his regiment to Bombay in April 1836 when he died at sea of cholera. His widow Mary and children arrived in Bombay and she shortly afterwards married an Ebenezer Aexander. Mary died herself in 1838 aged 25., and the children were brought up by Ebenezer Alexander and his second wife in India.
According to letters written by Daniel's daughter Mary Elizabeth Leahy in 1894 and 1896, my ancestor Daniel Leahy had 2 brothers one named John who went to America leaving his family, and one named William (who presumably stayed in Ireland) who left a widow and 2 children Daniel and Mary.
My ancestor Daniel Leahy also had a sister Mary Leahy who married an Edward Collins, who was a Lieutenant in the army in Bombay. Edward and Mary Collins left India (some time after 1838) but both died of cholera on the voyage back home. They had 5 daughters and a son Michael. One of the daughters Helena (born in Australia in 1833) married a Rev Charles T Mayo in England in 1859 and had 4 children. Another daughter Catherine/Kate married a John Villiers Tuthill in Limerick Ireland in 1852 and they later emigrated to Ontario, Canada with their 6 children in about 1860, 2 more being born later in Ontario. I have been in communication with a couple of Tuthill descendants who are also DNA matches with me on Ancestry.
I think there must be a connection with joleahy who posted on 9th December 2019 about his ancestor Daniel Leahy born in Bruff in 1853, but so far I cannot find the link.

Hi Roland,
The links below are to a website called Historic Graves. Eachtra Heritage and Ballyhoura Development have been surveying graveyards around Cork and Limerick and uploading the headstones online. The 5 graveyards below are all around Bruff. I wonder are you related to any of the Leahy's buried in Knockurgare graveyard - https://historicgraves.com/graveyard/knockuregare/li-knur . Copy and paste the links below to bring you directly to Leahy gravestones -->
https://historicgraves.com/knockuregare/li-knur-047/grave - a Leahy family whose members died between 1850-1880
https://historicgraves.com/knockuregare/li-knur-053/grave - a Leahy family whose members died between 1830 and 1860
I also found a recent grave in this graveyard, so the name is clearly still in use in Bruff -> https://historicgraves.com/graveyard/st-peter-paul-s/li-ppbr - 1 Leahy, died 2009
The final 3 graveyards around Bruff either have no Leahy's or at least no legible gravemarkers for Leahy's.

You could also try contacting Bruff Heritage Group on Facebook -->https://www.facebook.com/bruffheritagegroup . They may have local experts that can help in your search.
I hope this is some help!

John Villiers Tuthill would certainly have been Church of Ireland and a very good possibility from the Patrickswell Tuthill's they would have been of the property owning class.
