My name is Peter Goodman - I live in Cammeray which is a small suburb of Sydney NSW Australia.   I am researching my family history, and have discovered that my great great grandfather John Goodman is listed as being born in Bruff in 1807 - his mother being named Ann Hagar Fitzgerald.  She is listed on Ancestry as being born in bruff in 1785, but I can find little more detail.

Also on Ancestry however one family tree suggests that she married William Goodman in Dublin in 1804.  She also had 3 other sons born in 1805,1809 and 1811 also in Bruff.  I know that William was an Englishman and was probably a member of the Leicester Regiment of Militia that were garrisoned in Dublin.

John Goodman went back to England with his mother and father in about 1815, and eventually married Eliza Ludlow in West Bromwich Staffordshire.  They had several children, one of whom of course who was my gtreat grandfather.  John became a very successful Master Tailor, moved to London in about 1840 and worked there in St James until his death in 1873.

I would like to find any records of births of Ann Hagar Fitzgerald ( if in fact this was her maiden name) and of the sons James 1805, John 1807, William 1809 and Richard 1811.  I think that 3 of the boys would have emigrated to Baltimore or New York in the USA probably from England in the 1820-1830 period.

Any thoughts welcome either through the message board or direct by email to petergpq@tpg.com.au

Thank you in advance.

  • Hi Peter,

The nearest record on the site www.rootsireland.ie/ of Ann Fitzgerald born 1785 is 1788 but the parish was not Bruff so this may not be her.

The nearest record of a Bruff birth/baptism for Ann Fitzgerald is 1790

(There is a charge if you wan to view the full record to get the father's name)

There were transcription inaccuracies and literacy issues which affected the records.

I didn't check the ancestry trees you mentioned for the source of the birth year but this is the closest on rootsireland

Second name searches don't work so Hagar wasn't able to be used

There was no record of the marriage of Ann & William Goodman in Dublin or any county 1804 + - 10 years I'm afraid

Similarly there was no record of any of the children of Ann & William in any year or in any county

One explanation is that they were married / born in one of the counties whose records are not on rootsireland: Carlow, Clare & Kerry

There are 56 Goodmans in all counties in the Tithe Applotments 1826-37 which are free to search online but no Williams. Armagh & Derry records are missing from that collection.

Would be interesting to know the sources of the records cited on the ancestry trees

  • Col, Thank you very much for your response.  I have tried to reply but not sure if you have received it as I am trying to understand how this website works!

But basically my records show that Ann Hagar Fitzgerald was born in Bruff in 1785+/_ a few years.  She is supposed to have married William Goodman in Dublin in 1804 but this may have been to simply legitimise the births of the children.  From the Militia side of things I cannot find William Goodman in Dublin until 1811 and he may have met Ann then.  In which case she could have already had the 4 boys James 1805, John 1807, William 1809 and Richard 1811 with another father.  He could have been a Fitzgerald and her maiden name could have been Hagar?  All supposition I am afraid.

Is there anywhere that I can find records of births in Bruff from 1785 until 1811?  It may well be that William and Ann never foramlly married at all, but she did assume the name Goodman and went back to England with William in about 1815.  They had a daughter Mary in Galway in 1813 and the next child in Leicestershire in 1817.

    Kind regards,
