I am searching for the family of my great grandmother Ellen Connors. I have a photo of her but very little information about her. I believe she was born 1810-1815. Her father was James Connors and her mother was supposed to be Eliza Cronin. I can't find this marriage recorded anywhere. She was in Sydney Australia in 1841 where she had my great grandmother honoria Connell. She was clearly on her own as she had honoria in the benevolent asylum and had honoria boarded out until she married John friendship in 1844. In 1853 she sponsored William Connors to Australia and in 1854 she sponsored honora burke. At her wedding in 1844 her witnesses were Edward Crowe a stonemason and his wife Mary. She died in 1889 and is buried with Richard Kearney who died in April that year. Richard's funeral was organised by his cousins John and Patrick Gissane. I believe John came from Nenagh, Tipperary and Patrick from Limerick city. They were shoemakers. I have found a marriage of Ellen Connors to John Connell in 1835 in ballyclough cork but I don't know if this is her. Her daughter married William Troy from  galbally townland in Galbally parish. The strongest possibilities for Ellen's origin seem to be Doon ( where an Ellen Connors in recorded in poverty loan records), Galbally or Limerick city. Any help much appreciated. Tania Sweeney

    Parish records for Doon don't begin until 1824 so there won't be any baptism or other parish records available. Neither will there be a civil record as her birth as this doesn't begin for all denominations until 1864.

    Any mention of her in Limerick newspaper archives?

  • Hi Tania, Doon have a marvellous message board DUN BLEISCE MESSAGE BOARD/GUESTBOOK.  Have a go at posting a message on it somebody may have something handed down word of mouth.

    Also  The  graveyard in Doon is on line St Fintans,  www.historicgraves.ie.

    Have you had DNA done, its amazing what you find on it.

  • Dear ann I have looked at the Connors geneology site. There is an Ellen Connors listed as sponsor of baptisms where the timeframe would fi. The area is lackanagoneeny,Doon. In the late 1829s there is an Ellen Connors from curraghkamkeen ( curraghkilmeen?) who received poverty relief loans who would certainly fit the bill. It would fit with her behaviour in Australia where she worked to pay the Benevolent society a fee for the boarding out of her daughter., honoria from 1841-1844, most unusual for the time. She took her daughter out of foster care when she married an ex convict on 1844. There is also a parish record of an Ellen Connors marrying a John Connell in ballyclough, cork in 1837. This was the name of her first husband. But I have no evidence it was her. Regards Tania Sweeney
