Hello ,I'm trying to find any information on my GG grandfather John O'Dwyer and his family.

John came to Australia in 1856 (I think), then was married to Margaret Gaffney in 1872, but unfortunately, he was killed in a railway accident in 1885. I am having no luck in finding any concrete connections as the names are very common, His marriage announcement lists him as being his parents only son, but I assume that doesn't mean he was a sole child.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

I have looked on the boards and the information there are not for "my" John O'Dwyer.

Regards

Richard

  • Richard,

I looked at the paid site Roots Ireland, and it looks like John was the only child of his parents. The tithe applotment books (1826) show Timothy Dwyer & Margaret Dwyer in Upper Tomaline town land, and a Matt Dwyer in Lower Tomaline. Then the Griffith's Valutation (1851) show Thomas Dwyer & Eugene Dwyer as tenants in Upper Tomaline.

  • Hello Carolyn ,

    Thank you for your help.

I had a look on Johns' marriage certificate, and it lists his father's occupation as a farmer. Does that mean that, these Dwyer's are related ?

    Regards

  • Richard,

Yes, those Dwyer records indicate they were tenant farmers, but what's not clear is their relationship to your Thomas & John Dwyer.
