I was wondering if anyone out there is a descendant/relative of John O'Donnell and Catherine Keily(spelling? I believe her parents were John Keily and Catherine Butler) They are my 2nd grt grandparents. Their son Roger (b. 1860) was my great grandfather. His siblings were Darby (1855), Mary, Thomas (1855), Michael (1859), and John (1865). John, Roger, and Michael all came to the US, but I believe Thomas remained in Galbally, based on a letter in the possession of a cousin.

I would love to know if I still had living relatives in the area, and to learn more of the history of the family in Galbally.

Thank you.

  • Hello Tom

I would be familiar with the O'Donnell's of Knockanebrack Galbally

John is the son of Jeremiah O'Donnell & Mary Daly

John O'Donnell & Catherine  Kiely were married in Galbally Aherlow RC 19 Nov 1853 witnesses Denis Kiely & Ellen Cleary

Catherine Kiely was from Barna Galbally

She was the eldest daughter of Roger   Kiely & Catherine Hayes

I have plenty more on the siblings etc and yes descendants are still about Galbally

  • Yes there are descendants in Curraghkilbran townland of galbally. The O’Donnells took over a parcel of the troy land there. The O’Donnells willed it to a nephew mcsweeney. The nephew died but his elderly widow Nora mcsweeney still lives tthere. I will email you the details tomorrow. Regards Tania Sweeney

  • Mary, Thank you so much!  Some of that information I had, but a good deal I didn't.  Thank you again!!!

Tania, I look forward to hearing more from you!  Chasing my grt. grandfather's family has been an adventure to say the least. Apprently at some point he and my grandfather had a falling out, and they didn't talk much.  As a result my dad knows very little about the origins of his family.  I greatly appreciate all the help!!!

Thanks to everyone who responded so far.  I'm sure I 'll have more questions as time goes.

  • Patrick Troy had lots 3 and 4 in Curraghkilbran, galbally. In 1865 lot 3 was divided and John Daly took 17 of the 19 acres in lot 3. Patrick Troy kept 2 acres and the house was defined as lot 4A . Patrick died in 1876. In 1877 lots 4 A and 4B were in the name of representatives of Patrick Troy then in 1881 in na,e of David Keane. In 1884 Michael O’Donnell took over the land and in 1911 it’s in his name by way of the  land purchasing act he became owner. In 1935 it goes to Rodger o’Donnell then in 1970 to John mcSweeney. John has died. He inherited the land from an O’Donnell aunt.his wife Nora McSweeney still lives there. And I’m sure if you write to her she can tell you about the odonnells. Next to her is to  Fraher, next to him, Sarah McSweeney Nora’s daughter, then the Daly land. See Irish central website for my article on Troy land Tania Sweeney Sydney Australia

Dear Tom   It’s not a silly question.  If you write to Nora McSweeney, Curraghkilbran , via galbally, limerick that will reach her. Curraghkilbran is not big nor is the village of galbally. You might ask her...If she can’t help you directly, she will know her late husband’s o’donnell Relations who could help. They may live in neighbouring areas such as ballylanders I think. Your Tipperary contact ireland xo above will also be able to help a great deal. Henry Fraser at frasers pub in galbally, limerick might also be able to help, Their email contact is  on line via his wife I think. You might mention you got Henry’s name from me, Tania from Australia. I met him last year.  Let me know if I can help further. Tania Sweeney Australia

  • Cordangan Tipperary- So Catherine Kiely was not John's daughter, but Roger's? That is interesting.  The O'Donnells that are still in the area, are they Thomas' descendants?

Tania- I tried to locate an email for Henry and Mary Fraser, or at least a FB page for the pub, but was unsuccessful.

    Sorry for delay in replying

Have you made any further progress on contacting the descendants?

  • Good evening!

I made great progress!  Tania Sweeney was able to put me in touch with Nora McSweeney, who in turn put me in touch with Kevin Dillon, who is the grt. grt. grandson of my grt. grandfather's brother Tom.  They still live in Galbally and have the family homestead,  We've been able to exchange quite a bit of information.  My oldest son got to meet the family last October when he was in Ireland.  I'm hoping to get back over in the next year.

I can't express properly how grateful I am to all of you who answered.  It was a great help!

    Best regards

    Tom

dear Tom I am going next year too. The best time to be in Galbally village is the last weekend in August when they have the galbally festival. On Friday night there is wonderful singing and music playing by Galbally locals, on Saturday night a concert at the local hall and on Sunday a fair at the park behind the church. Good places to stay are the frewens at ballinacourty and on the August weekend with Steve and Geraldine patten in thormond house right in the village. Houses there have names on the outside one is Kiely. I see Edmond Fraher is also on your family list. Tom Fraher lives next door to Mrs McSweeney and is her son in law. Tania
