Am looking for information on Shevlin/Shevlane from the village of Tooraglass ( or similar) in the town of Belmullet.Also the surname of Neary.Thomas Neary married Mary Meenaghan who was born in Manchester in that country about 1904 unsure of which state.The Meenaghan family returned to Ireland when Mary was about 9 years old.Their daughter Nancy/Anne , who is still living, married Martin Shevlin, who is deceased.As Nancy is getting older she cannot remember much of her ancestry. I am doing this on behalf of her son Thomas who is a neighbor of mine in Australia. From Kathleen Ryan.

The Irish Censuses are freely available online at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/
The 1911 Census has 8 Shevlins in Ballyglass Bellmullet
If you click on the name it will take you to the family list.
The 1901 Census has 8 in Ballyglass Belmullet
There are none in any county in any of the other censuses (1851, 41, 31 or 21)
Griffiths Valuation (1848-64 7 free online at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/ have 114 Shevlins but none in Mayo
The Tithe Applotments (free at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) have 30 Shevlins mostly in Donegal & Monaghan
www.rootsireland.ie/ (a subscription site)has lots of Thomas Neary (or close surname variations) baptisms in Mayo but only 2 from Belmullet: 1872 from Belmullet Civil parish & 1877 Belmullet R C parish

The townland for the family was Toorglass. This townland is about four kilometers from the town of Belmullet. The civil parish is Kilcommon (Erris) as you indicated. Below are links to two Shevlane families in Toorglass in the 1901 census (Note one family is shown as Sherlane which was a mistranscription). There is a 16 year old Martin in one of the families.

Hello Kathleen,
I know this is a relatively old thread, but I have been searching for Martin Shevlane for a bit of time. Was this the same Martin Shevlane/Shevlin born in 1908, Belmullet? The Martin Shevlane in my family was born this date to John Shevlane and Bridget Murphy. If it's the same guy, when did he pass away? Is Nancy still alive?
