I am trying to find the home of my ancesors George Massy (d. 1806) and John Massy (d. 1846) in Kilcullane.  In a range of historical documents both are listed as "of Turrets House."  John's children were baptized in Hospital and bare the notation "Kilcullane."  In the 1833 tithe applotment books John Massy is listed as living in the townland of Killkillane in the civil parish of Kilcullane (there is in the book a separate Kilcullane townland).  In the Limerick voter rolls of 1868 and 1776, a James Bourchier is listed as "of Turrets House" in Kilcullane.  I assume this would be the same house.  It seems to be distinct from Kilcullane House, which the Bourchiers sold to Viscount Guillamore.  Can anyone help me find the house, its location, or the location of the townland referenced in the tithe applotment book?

  • Dear Len

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Have you had a look on the Ordnance Survey Ireland  Historical Map to see if you can see it?

This is the LINK to the maps - the historical tab is just above their price list. As you are not buying a map you won't have to pay. It takes a bit of time to get the hang of but is a good tool for your purposes. Once you are in the actual map of Ireland you use the menu on the right hand side of the map as well as the zoom function. You can see a modern day street map or the earlier maps with the corresponding topographical features - wells, forts, big houses etc.

    Best wishes

  • Clare,  Thank you for the tip.  I have looked at the historic maps.  Only Kilcullane House is identified.  And there is no indication of where in the civil parish of Kilcullane, the townland of Killkillane (distinct from the separate townland of Kilcullane in the Tithe Applotment Books of 1833) is located.  I need the help of someone who really knows the area of Kilcullane and its history.  I see I have a typo in my initial query:  where I wrote James Bourchier is identified as "of Turrets House" in the Limerick electoral rolls of 1868, I should have written 1768.  Len Klekner

  • Hi again

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. You could contact the Library as they often know of people who have very specific knowledge, especially in the Local History Studies side of things:

    All the best
