I would like to find out about my gggrandfather's family who lived in Kilkeedy Parish. His name was John Shaughnessy born about 1839. His parents' names were Maurice Shaughnessy and Margaret Walsh. though I have been unable to locate John's baptism certificate, I found the records for 3 of his siblings, Honora (born in 1843), Margaret  (1845), and Thomas (1843) born in the Kilkeedy Parish. John came to the Albany, NY area abt 1852. I believe he may traveled with his sisters, a Bridget and Ellen Shaughnessy. Bridget was born about 1837, Ellen (birth unknown) was listed as his first son's godmother who was also named Maurice and christened in Cohoes, NY. John was related to the Cahill and maybe to the Lynch and McMahon families. John went to Ontario,Canada where he lived for about 15 years then returned to Cohoes,NY. Family folkfore reports that he had some family in Canada. John took William as a middle name in later years. I was looking for where his family maybe buried, where they  lived, and and any descendents who have some information about them. John's father was not listed as a tenant farmer in the Census Substitute  anywhere near the Kilkeedy Parish.

Thank-you for your assistance with this, J.Shaughnessy Albany, NY

  • Dear J.Shaughnessy

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I don?t know if you have looked at the rootsireland site, but there is a marriage record there for a Maurice Shaughnessy married to a wife, first name Margaret in Co. Limerick in 1832. As this is a subscription site I am limited in what I can see. It might be a good idea to have a look so that you can rule it either in or out. As you know, there are baptisms for Hannah, Margaret and Thomas there too. There is also a civil death record there for Maurice O?Shaughnessy in 1871.

Other important sources include the Tithe Applotment Books and Griffith?s Valuation. Even though these sources only record the head of the household, the information is very important and can be valuable:

    Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1837): http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp

    Griffith?s Valuation (1847-1864): http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

The National Archives of Ireland: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/ you can search the 1901/1911 Census on the National Archives page too, for instances of the family name at that time

Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Best of luck with your search

  • Hello there

I am revisiting some older Irelandxo requests and have one from you concerning Shaughnessy and Walsh.

I realise that our Clare did give you an amount of sites from where you might gather information, however these sites are being updated almost dail and I wondered whether you had managed to locate the people as you wished or perhaps you are still in a quandery.

Perhaps you might like to tell us of your experience and / or your success. Perhaps you might still require some help

    Good Luck
