I am not sure if my Hickey/McGrath relatives are from Knockainy, however, after much research in Griffiths Valuation and the 1901 and 1911 census, I have determined this is a possibility as there appears to be many Hickeys and McGraths in this area. I would appreciate any help you can give me. The following is what I know of my family:

James Hickey - born about 1790 - 1799, Ireland,  died in Boston, MA at 20 Prince Street in 1879, came to USA about 1847. Parents Thomas and Ellen Hickey.

He married Ellen McGrath - born about 1807,in Ireland,  died in Boston, MA at 20 Prince Street in 1884. Parents Daniel and Bridget McGraph/McGrath.

Children: Hannah Hickey born about 1828 in Ireland. Married a Richard Hunt. They had 10 children born in MA - 3 lived.

Margaret Hickey, born Ireland, about 1830

Ellen Hickey, born about 1833, married Dennis Driscoll in 1861, her 2nd marriage.

Catherine Hickey, born Ireland about 1834, married my great, grandfather Jeremiah McCarthy, in Boston,MA

January 26, 1864, they had 4 girls and 1 boy. Their daughter, Catherine McCarthy, my

grandmother,  married Peter Maloney. Their only child, Richard Maloney, was my father.

Julia Hickey, born about 1838 in Ireland.

Bridget Hickey, born about 1839 in Ireland. Married a Daniel Sullivan in 1857 in Boston.

William Hickey, born in 1854 in Boston, MA, never married.

Many thanks again.

  • Jane,

Thank you for contacting Knockainey through the irealndxo website. We, the Community Council, have established a Community Office in Knockainey, and John and Anne Marie who work there are currently working on research for the Week of Welcomes which takes place here from June 28th to July 1st. They are helping to trace the descendents of those who left here over the years, and it is a possibility that you may be part of that Knockainey diaspora! We will look at the church records on your behalf, and perhaps we can throw some light on your enquiry. John in the office has already written to you, and it is good to see these links being developed. You can keep in touch with the office at knockaineycommunityoffice@gmail.com.  Of course, we would like to invite you to Knockainey for our Welcome weekend June 28th to July 1st; it would be great to meet you then if you can make it. Kind regards, Mary O'Grady Chairperson Knockainey Community Council
