I am researching my great great grandmother, Johanna Hayes. Due to lack of records some of the info I have collected is based on speculation. I have used Ancestry, RootsIreland, and Irishgenealogy. Johanna Hayes was born about 1814 and died in 1894, per her death record. She married Patrick Fogarty (1793-1866) in Glenbrohane and Knocklong Parish in 1833. Johanna and Patrick lived in Glenlara, Glenbrohane, Limerick and had at least 16 children. Their first daughter was Johanna and their second son might be John, my grandfather, or Maurice. I have never found John’s birth record. Censuses and death records show his birth between 1837 and 1852.

There is a death record for a Johanna Hayes (abt. 1783-1869) living in Ballinvreena (town next to Glenlara) at her death. Could this be Johanna Hayes Fogarty’s mother? When Johanna Fogarty’s son Maurice was born, the address was Ballinvreena. I heard sometimes women would go home to their mother to have their baby.

There was John Hayes leasing land in the 1830s, per the tithe applotment book, in Glenlara and Ballinvreena. Could this be Johanna Fogarty’s father?

A James Hayes married Johanna Madden in 1848. They had their children in Ballinvreena. Could this be Johanna Hayes Fogarty's brother?  One of James and Johannas' children baptismal sponsors was Patrick Fogarty. Per the land revision book James owned land in Ballinvreena in 1879 (info provided by a volunteer).

Any suggestions on how I can confirm these are Johanna’s parents. I assume they all attended St. Patrick’s Church in Glenbrohane. I have not found additional records from there.

Thank you- Mary

  • Eileen,

Thank you for this information. Yes, Patrick was Johanna Hayes and Patrick Fogarty's oldest son. He was my great grandfather's, John, brother. With the help of many Fogarty descendants, I have been able to gather a large amount of info on the Fogarty family. I visited the area in 2019. Since records are difficult to come by, late 1700s/ early 1800s I am unable to fill in the blanks. Patrick Fogarty who died in 1866 in Glenlara parents were Johanna Heffernan and Patrick Fogarty. They had three other children- Michael, Johanna, and John who moved to Indiana. I know nothing else about Johanna H. Patrick's father and grandfather (1697-1775), both named Patrick, are buried at Galbally Cemetery.

    Regards- Mary

  • PJ,

In addition to the Fogarty/ Hayes families, I connect to the Raleigh/ Kinkead family of Ballinvreena and the Lane/Purcell family of Knocklara.

I have had my DNA tested. Have you? Ancestry username MaryTV, MyHeritage  Mary Van Luling. I have Gedmatch results but need to look up the number.

Two years ago I was working with some contacts to figure out if there was a link between the Maddens of Glenbrohane and Maddens of Bulgaden. We gathered info on your family.

    Regards- Mary
