Good morning,

Based upon my analysis of vital records found in both Massachusetts and Limerick, I am reasonably confident I have successully traced my 3rd great grandparents, John Cosgrove and Theresa, Dunn back to Limerick City.  John and Theresa were married in Limerick City in June 1871.  Their ages at the time of their marriage were 18 years old.  They immigrated to the United States in Feb 1883 with several of their children who survived childhood(assuming I am tracking the right family unit).

I believe I found Theresa's birth record on Rootsireland (her parents names, John Dunn and Catherine O'Connor/Connor,  and year of birth (1853) are consistent with the information on her death record I found in Massachusetts).

According to their John and Theresa's marriage record, John's father's name was Patrick Cosgrove.  Unfortunately, his mother's name was not listed and I dont have any US-based records that list her name either. I found two birth records for John Cosgroves, one born to a John Cosgrove in 1852 and another born to a Patrick Cosgrove born in 1854 (see list of records below).

While I believe I have successfully found additional Limerick City birth records (on Rootsireland) for children born to John Dunn and Catherine O'Connor, I am at a standstill for the Cosgrove line.  I looked at the baptism records for John and Theresa Cosgrove's children to see if  I could find other Cosgrove  family members who may have served as a sponsor at the baptisms to help me find potential family units.  I found one such person: Bridget Cosgrove, but not sure her relationship to John Cosgrove (sister? cousin?).

Based upon my research findings (summarized above), I have narrowed down possible Limerick City Cosgrove families listed below:

- Patrick Cosgrave (father), Joan Moloney (mother), and Bridget Cosgrave (born 1850)(St. Patrick's)

- Patrick Cosgrave (father), Judith Moloney (mother), and John Cosgrave (born 1854)(St Patrick's)

- Patrick Cosgrove (father), Catherine McInerney (mother), and Bridget Cosgrove (born 1854)(St Mary's)

I also found the following family units in Limerick City for the same time frame that are somewhat consistent with the information stated above:

- John Cosgrave (father), Johanna Moloney (mother), and Patrick Cosgrave (b 1848) (St. Mary's)

- John Cosgrave (father), Julia Moloney (mother), and John Cosgrave (b 1852)(St. Patrick's)

- John Cosgrave (father), Judith Moloney (mother), and Catherine Cosgrave (b 1855)(St. Patrick's)

As you can see, its a bit of a mess with Patrick and John Cosgrove were married to different Moloney women in a tight time frame (1848-1855).

So in summary, I believe I have traced Theresa Dunn's  line back to John Dunn and Catherine O'Connor of Limeric City.  I have a strong lead for John Cosgrove's father (a man named Patrick Cosgrove), but that is about it.  I have conducted very thorough searches of the usual Irish records on Ancestry, Family Search, etc as well as Irish government websites.  I have gone as far as to take the AncestryDNA test and uploaded the results to Family Tree DNA and MyHeritage.  No Cosgrove matches that are even remotely reliable (three total, shared cM levels are well below the accepted 7-10 shared cM threshold).  I started a Cosgrove surname project on Family Tree DNA in hopes of bringing together more Cosgroves to help solve our genalogical puzzles but that is slow going as well.

Any suggestions on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

Bob
