My great, great grandparents were William and Johanna (Chamberlain) Collopy. They were married in Manister in 1843 and left Ireland sometime after the birth of their first child in 1846. They spent the first 10+ years in Canada and then came to Western New York in 1861. In both the Canadian census's she lists her faith as Church of Ireland. All I can find on her so far is that her father's name was probably Michael and she had at least two brothers, James and John. Can any one help. I know William was baptized in St Patrick's, Limerick City in 1820.  Was there ever a Church of Ireland in the Manister area during this time period? Also, if a Catholic and a Church of Ireland couple were married at this time, what were the social and religious consequences?? I noticed that the spelling of their child's last name changed and was wondering if it might have been a result of their inter faith marriage. Thanks for any help!!! Randy Colopy

Not sure what the consequences for intermarriages at that time. My great great grandparents married at that time. He was Catholic and she was Protestant.. They had ceremonies in both churches. She stayed Protestant and their children were raised Catholic.

  • I was hoping to see if there may be any local history of the Chamberlains who live near or around Manister. William and Johanna's children were Michael, John, James, Joseph, and Julia.  If the two Chanmberlain's male marriage records there are correct, then her father was probably Michael. Was wondering if her mother was Julia???  Thank you Mary for what you sent!  I believe the church records for this parish only goes back to the mid 1830's so they won't be of much help

  • Hi Randall

It is strange that you should be asking at this time as only two weeks ago I had an enquiry from a Michael O Riordan who told me that the Chamberlin Family had a connection with the Cantillion Family who lived in Manister House, and moved from there to Adare and lived in the house opposite the back gate into Adare Manor. He was finding it difficult to get any information on the Chamberlin Family who would certainly have been Church of Ireland ( there was never a Church of Ireland in Manister) there were several Church of Irelands in the area but the numbers would have been very small. I have found it challenging to find out anything out about the Chamberlin Family but will keep trying.

  • Hi Randell

I forgot to mention that Collopy was a name from Mungret/Patrickswell Parish and there is still a cross called ''Collopy's Cross'' outside Patrickswell Village and it certainly would have been a Roman Catholic name.
