Bridget (known in Australia as Delia) Mannix bap. 13 August 1844 at St Munchin's Limerick

I am trying to locate any information on my 2Xgreat grandmother Bridget (Delia) Mannix. She came from Limerick (St Munchen's Parish).  Her parents were John Mannix and Bridget White. She came to Australia in 1862 aboard the ship Eastern Empire. She was sponsored. Her sister Catherine Mary Mannix came to Australia before her in 1858 on the Queen of England. Their mother's sister Mary White married Daniel Monaghan in Limerick before coming to Australia in 1840 aboard the Adam Lodge.

Mary and Bridget White's parents were Martin White and Nancy Quinn from Galway. Both Mary and Bridget were married at St Munchin's so I assume the family moved to Limerick at some stage.

I know Delia was married in Sydney, Australia to James Smith in 1872. I have finally broken through my brickwall but know little about about her in Ireland and would appreciate any help.

  • Hi Anne

Considering the information that you currently have here are a list of some websites that may be of use to you in furthering your research:

    http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

    http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introductio…

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/

    http://www.lcc.ie/Library/

Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. The University of Woolongong has produced, on microfiche, a complete index and transcript of all information concerning immigrants of Irish origin recorded on ships' passenger lists between 1848 and 1867. These are useful for finding out an exact place of origin as well as parents' names. The Public Record Office of Victoria has good online databases of settlers at www.prov.vic.gov.au Otherwise, other records may be found in the Colonial Office Papers of the UK National Archives, class reference CO 201.

Until you find a place name of origin for your family in Limerick remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search. I hope this is of some help.
