I posted a few years ago looking for information. I thought I might update some info and try again.
My great grandfather was Michael Keaty, dob approximately 1871. He married Katherine Fennelly at Nicker Church (St. John the Baptist) in Pallasgreen on 10 Oct 1891. The marriage transcription obtained from rootsireland shows Michael’s father as Thomas. They had four children, three of whom came to America.
In the 1901 and 1911 Census, Michael’s mother is living with him and his family in Brackile and is named Margaret (maiden name unknown).
While I can find several people named Thomas Keaty, I cannot find a birth record for Michael, nor a marriage record for his parents. I also cannot locate any other siblings who might have the same parents. I did not confine my search to Limerick, but rather, all of Ireland.
I have search extensively on Ancestry, Find My Past, Rootsireland, Family Search, and Irish genealogy as well as going through original parish records at NLI. I have tried many variations of the Keaty name to account for inaccurate recording including Keating, Keety, Keene, Kady, Caty, Cody, Quady, Kete, Kite, etc.
While I know it is not a prolific name in Ireland, there were (and are) quite a few in the areas of Limerick, Tipperary, and Clare. I am hoping someone might have some information or that there is a Good Samaritan in Ireland who could help me. Thanks so much.

Michele:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Is it possible that a mistake was made on the 1891 marriage record for the father's name or his father sometimes went by Michael and other times by Thomas. If you can subscribe to that theory then the record below may be for your Michael.

Hi Roger. I am sorry that I somehow missed your reply.
Unfortunately I know that this is not the same person. The Michael you list is the son of Michael Keaty and Catherine Ryan. I have researched this Michael as well. My Michael’s mother’s name was Margaret. I do not know her maiden name. As I mentioned, I have actually been through all of the civil and church records at Irishgenealogy as well as on Rootsweb, Find My Past, Family Search, and Ancestry, com. No record of Michael’s birth or his parent’s marriage can be found with any spellings that I have used.
I was hoping someone related to my Michael Keaty might see this and reply. It might happen sometime! Thanks for replying.

Hi Michele,
I have Keaty/Keating in my family tree from County Limerick in the Parish of Murroe and Boher, but my connections are 30 years before yours. I just wanted to mention it to you in case it could help. If you have done a DNA and posted to familytreedna, we can try a DNA match there? You never know, you could be one of the missing links I've been searching to find for 30 years.
Best to you,
Dawn

The death of Margaret Keaty (Michael's mother) seems to have been registered in the Registrar's District of Tipperary in 1922, with Margaret dying on 4 March 1922, in Brackile, a widow who was supposedly aged 78 years (i.e. born about 1844). The witness was son Michael.
At the time of the 1901 Census, Margaret's age was reported as 60 years (i.e. born about 1840) - widow.
At the time of the 1911 Census, Margaret's age was reported as 73 years (i.e. born about 1838) - single.
One possibility is that Michael was illegitimate.
I will look again later.

If Margaret Keaty never married, then she might have been baptised in 1838 in the parish of Pallasgreen and Templebredin, Limerick - to parents Thomas and Bridget.

In 1892, in the Registrar's district of Tipperary, the death was recorded of Thomas Keaty (90 years, widower). The informant was his daughter Margaret Keaty.

A Bridget Keaty (75 years, possibly the wife of Thomas) died in 1887, with the informant a Margaret Keaty.
By the way, the maiden name of Bridget Keaty (wife of Thomas) seems to have been Crow.

Hi Dawn,
I have done DNA tests through both Ancestry and 23 and me. I uploaded my Ancestry to to Gedmatch and My Heritage. I have not yet uploaded it to Familytreedna. I will take a look and see if I can try that this week. I’ll let you know. Thx so much!Michele

Hi Willie,
I did have the information regarding the 1901 and 1911 Census with Margaret’s information. And, I have her death record as well. My family has stated that Margaret was indeed married and that Michael was not illegitimate. I realize that is not verified, but I tend to believe it is more likely.I had also made note of Thomas Keaty (Dod 1892) and Bridget Crow Keaty (Dod 1887). I have considered the possibility that this Thomas and Bridget are actually Michael’s grandparents as I have found a DNA connection to a descendant of a couple listed as Thomas Keating and Bridget Crow. They had two daughters who went to Australia and one of their decendents shows up as a match. If this is the case, the Margaret Keaty who reported the death would either be the spinster aunt or an aunt in law of Michael.
I have hundreds of records for Keaty’s in Ireland and America, but have never been able to find the ones I need. This is why I think that the only way I will ever know for sure will either be through DNA matches or surviving family members with actual knowledge. My father traveled to Ireland and connected with several Keaty families. But no one was ever able to find an actual connection—though it didn’t stop them all from drinking with their “kin”!
Thanks so much for looking into this for me!
