Hello. I would appreciate any help with tracing my Limerick Mulrooney family. In particular, I am interested in Paddy Mulrooney who owned a chemist on the Ennis Road in Limerick. The Chemist passed to his son Jack who died in 1991. Jack died without leaving a will - and Francis O'Brien, St Mary's, Ballingarry, Co Limerick and Eamonn O'Brien Abbeyvale, Corbally, Co Limerick were listed as the administrators of his estate. I would be very interested in getting in contact with them or relatives as I would love to get to know more about Paddy (Patrick Joseph) Mulrooney via old letters, photographs, diaries that he left behind (if they still exist). Or anyone who might have known the family well. The Chemist was next door to a newsagents called gemmas.

Many thanks

  • Hi.  I am an IrelandXO volunteer living in Limerick but not originally from here so I am at a slight disadvantage when it comes to putting you in touch with the people you want but I can ask some people who grew up here.  I can remember the pharmacy on the Ennis Road not far from Sarsfield Bridge because I lived near there when I was a student here back in the early 1970's.  It seems to have been called the Belfield Pharmacy.  According to the obits for the the family names you identified above in the Irish Independent they lived at 50 O'Dwyer Villas, Thomondgate, less than a mile from the pharmacy.  I also see that the info about the will administration papers appeared in the newspapers.
I found a death cert for Robert Mulrooney, a "Chemist's Son" who drowned at 11 years of age while swimming in Kilkee, County Clare in 1937.  I think this will be their first son because his name coincides with the name of his grandfather and he would have been born the year after they married.

I found some information about Patrick's family.   His parents Robert Mulrooney married Mary-Agnes Francis who married in St Michael's Church on Apr 28, 1897.  At that time he was working as a clerk living in Limerick.  His father Patrick was an Ex RIC officer and Mary-Agnes's father Anthony was a sailor.  Robert appears to have become a travelling sales rep some time later and took up residence in Tipperary Town.  Children found:
20-Mar-1878 Patrick Joseph, Born in Tipperary
12-Feb-1900 Mary Catherine, Born in Tipperary
    15-Feb-1902 Elizabeth, Born in Tipperary
    26-Jan-1906 Agnes-Ita, Born in Limerick

The family was living in Kilrush, County Clare when Patrick married Mary Quinlivan in 1925.  His grandmother Catherie Francis was born in Clare according to the 1901 census so this might have had something to do with it.
Not sure how much of this you already know or which one of the family connects to you.  I can try to find out some more but in the case of living people I can't publish any details here.

  • Thanks a lot Tim for taking the time to reply. I had most of that information but some is new (like the date of Paddy's birth and I never thought about the Clare connection with his grandmother. Thanks for that. The sailor grandfather was from the Azores and that family is easier to trace back but finding out more about Robert Mulrooney senior his mother Eliza Ahern Mulrooney is proving more elusive.

Paddy was born in 1898 not 1878 which I think was just a typo. He also had a brother called Robert who went on to be a successful businessman (Fruit importers) in Limerick.
Paddy lost a son and young daughter in the same year - very sad.

I will send you an email with my contact details in case you do get in touch with people who might know more. Thanks very much again Tim - I really appreciate your support.

  • Hello, Jack Mulroney was my godfather, and my Dad's (Sam Benson) cousin and best man at his wedding. We used to visit Aunty May and Uncle Paddy every time we visited Limerick (we lived in Dublin). Aunty May (Mary Quinlivan) was my father's Aunty - the younger sister of his mother Margaret 'Madge' Quinlivan. Their house in Thomandgate was a lovely place to visit - Uncle Paddy always made us lemonade with ice cream in it (a delicious treat at the time!) and gave us coins he kept in cigar / cigarette cases. Lovely man, so funny and generous and welcoming. I live in London now but I will see if I can lay my hands on any photos - obviously Jack is in my parents' wedding album and I remember visiting Aunty May on my communion and getting a photo taken with her in her garden.

  • Hello. I love this site - I'm really honoured that Jack's godson has got in touch :) Thanks so much for responding and for sharing memories of Paddy and May. It really means a lot. I have some photos of Paddy, May and Jack would be very happy to share if they are of interest. I would be very interested to get in contact with you and also to hear more about the family and also to get photos if you do come across them. I can also explain the interest in the family too. Many thanks.

I'd forgotten about the lemonade and ice cream treat that was popular back in the day... my mother treated us to coke float on one occasion and I still remember it.

  • Hello Mr Benson. Hope you are keeping well in these difficult times! Do you recall Jack ever mentioning Mulrooney cousins or relatives in Milwaukee in the US? He mentioned this to my Dad on the one occasion that they met. I haven't come across this in my genealogy research so far, so it was interesting to hear. Or did Jack mention anything about his grandmother (Mary Francisco Mulrooney)? He would have known her growing up as she lived into her 80s. I have a few photos of him and his dad too that I would love to share and try to figure out who the people are. Or any more stories or memories of Paddy Mulrooney would be very appreciated. Thank you.

  • Trying again in November 2020. If Mr Benson receives this notification please get in touch. Or if anyone else has any memories please share.

Paddy Mulrooney was my grandfather who I never met and of whom I know little about. Likewise, I know little about Jack who is obviously also directly related. I know that Paddy was part of the Irish volunteers in Limerick - Limerick City Brigade; Irish Republican Army; B Company; and later he was the owner of a chemist shop and lived in Thomandgate.

I wish I had started this search 20 years ago or earlier because with every passing year it becomes less likely that I will find out more about them. People who would have any recollection of them would be 60+ at this stage. But here´s hoping!

    Thank you!
