Hi,
I am planning a trip to Ireland this year and am searching for some information on my ancestors.
Patrick Hourigan is my Great great great Grandfather. He was married to Mary Kearney and they had a son,Michael born circa 1836 in Cappamore.
Michsel Hourigan married Mary Kearney ,my Great grandmother , she was born circa 1842 in Cappamore and I believe her parents were Patrick Kearney and Margaret Nolan.
I would love to find out if Michael and Mary were cousins.
Regards
Margie

  • Margie:

I just sent you a very likely baptismal record for Mary Kearney. They may have been related. Patrick Hourigan was one of the sponsors for Mary's baptism.

  • Hello Irish Eyes,

I believe the following record pertains to you ancestors...

    Michael Hourigan  Date of Birth:

Date of Baptism:11-May-1834    Address: Dark Island Parish/District  :DOON  Gender Unknown  County  Co. Limerick

    Denomination:Roman Catholic
Father: Patk. Hourigan    Mother:Mary Kearney   Occupation:

    Sponsor 1 /
    Informant 1:Patk. KearneySponsor 2 /
    Informant 2:Mgt. Hourigan

I have searched for marriager record for Michael and Mary but cant find one. I've searched for Mary Kearneys birth but can't find one that exactly matches all information received from you.

I don't believe that we would be able to prove or disprove a blood relationship between these two families.  It is not unknown for many families of the same name to live in a townsland and have absolutely no connection to each other.

    Kind regards,

    Anne Dennehy

  • Hi Anne & Roger,

Thank you both for your help. Michael Hourigan and Mary Kearney married in Queensland Australia so I have that record. Anne, I think that record may very well  be of my ancestor ,Michael Hourigan .he married Mary Kearney who maybe the Patrick Kearney who is Michael's sponsor. I will keep digging. Thanks again.

    Cheers

  • I am a decendant from the Hourigan family from Darkisland Doon. My great granfather was Jeremiah Hourigan he was a brother of Michael. My granfather Patrick lived on the farm until he died, then his son Timothy ran the farm. You are definitely a direct relative as i have all the family tree written down taken from the local church records

  • Hi Team,
I have had great success with the Parish records for Doon and have found my ancestor's Baptismal records. I am now searching for the previous generation, Baptismal and Marriage records. I note the NLI does not have records for the period I need: Baptisms before 1824 and Marriages before 1839. Are you able to advise if these records are available and if so where I might find them .Thank you
    Regards
    Margie

  • Margie:

My reference book indicates that Doon records start in 1824. I assume 1839 is the first year for marriages. You may want to contact the church in Doon.

  • Do any of you have a William James Hourigan- 1828 birth?  First record in N. America is marriage in 1852- Oswego, NY to Ann Sullivan.  Children- Margaret Jane, Sarah Ellen, Ann and Mary.

  • Hi
I have not come across a William in my research. Do you know what town your ancestor came from ? Good luck with your search.

  • Hi Margie-  I have nothing prior to 1852.  The info I do have came from a Civil War pension file.  William James Hourigan enlisted in the 89th Illinois Infantry Volunteers in 1863.  He died in 1871 from disease contracted during the war.  His widow filed a claim and was successful in receiving a modest pension many years later.  The file contained documentation relating to their marriage and birth of each child as they moved from westward from New York, eventually arriving in the Green Bay area of Wisconsin.

I have followed each of the sponsors named in these records and never found a family member.  I have searched the places where they lived for other Hourigans at the time- no luck.  The four children born to this couple were all girls- so a hint from naming patterns isn't very strong.

When I saw your post with a Margaret and Mary in the right timeframe, I thought it was worth a try.

Thanks for getting back to me-

    Susan

  • Hi Roger,
Courtney Graham's father, Neil is my cousin so her enquiry relates to my post. Courtney just copy & paste the info on Michael Hourigan and Mary Kearney in my post if you are posting a new thread.
    Cheers

  • I debated starting a new thread, but my question very definitely applies to this thread, so I hope some of you are still around. I am very interested in the Dark Island eviction of 1848, when nineteen houses were taken down, including four Hourigan families (Patrick, Michael, another Michael, and Rody). There was also a Mary Hourigan who had a lease of 3 lives rather than an at will lease, so she was able to stay. I'd like to figure out who was related to whom and where they all went. (I descend from Rody and know his journey.) If anyone reading this is descended from them, I'd be happy to follow-up in email. Thanks!  AnnRaymont@att.net
