First and foremost I wanted to say a sincere thank you to all of you for offering your time and assistance in helping those of us of Irish descent find our roots and the many branches on our family trees.

Now on to my quest.  My 3rd great grandfather was Michael O'Brien. He was born in County Limerick sometime in 1800.  He married Margaret Flannigan b 1803 (or Flannedy-we believe her father's name was James) on 2 Jun 1821.  They had 8 children (of whom we are aware and can find some records for): Mary Ann b 1824; Margaret Bridget b 1828; Michael John b 1831; Sarah b 1832; Rosina b 1838; Bury John b 24 Oct 1841 (my 2nd great grandfather - born in St Michael's Parish, Robert, Limerick); Georgina b 1844; and Jane b 1846.

We know that Sarah, Michael John and Bury John came to the US on the Brig John Muirs arriving in New York on 20 May 1854 and that their mother, Margaret, and sisters, Rosina and Georgina, came to the US and emigrated to Australia. What we don't know is what happened to their father, Michael (although we believe he died around 1849) and why the women went to Australia.

I'm going to be coming to Ireland next year for the O'Brien Clan's commemoration of the Battle of Clontarf and the death of High King Brian Boru and hope to visit the parish where my family was from.

Thank you again for any assistance in helping me find my Irish family.

Sincerely,

Deborah Adams

  • Hi Deborah

Thank you very much for your kind words. We hope to be able to continue our work into the future.  It is a good start to know that your family came from County Limerick however to find any records relative to your family you will have to find a place name such as a parish or townland. Did you acquire the information on the arrival of your family to the USA from some personal documents of theirs or emigration records? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. This could be a good place to find more information. -And perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.

Here are some web sites that may be of help to you:
