Hi from Australia.  May I please ask if anyone has researched the surname Collis and Boyd families?

I have located Henry Collis who may have been born at Askeaton and was Sheriff / High Sheriff of Limerick in 1800 and again from 1812 to 1817 inclusive.  Henry married Elizabeth nee Going in 1799 at Belleisle, Co. Clare.

Daughter Mary Going Collis baptised 7 April 1813 at St John Limerick married James Butler Boyd, (son of Thomas Boyd and Mary Ann Boyd) on 25 June 1832 (I am assuming it is Limerick).

Sadly Mary passed away in 1842 at 29 years of age.  James Butler Boyd built a Freestanding square-plan limestone mausoleum, erected in 1842, on an elevated site within the grounds Saint Mary's Cathedral. I have a photograph and information on this mausoleum.

I have sourced this couple had 6 children that I have found.

May I please ask if anyone else has researched this couple?  Information on the Boyd and Collis family would be very gratefully received as I am missing information information on James' birth and information on his parents and back further and also on Henry Collis.

Thanking you in advance.  Kind regards  Judi

  • Hi Judi,

I'm in Australia also. Ancestor (immigrant c.1850) had surname Collins, and born at Askeaton.

Perhaps your Collis is a typo. for Collins?

    Cheers

  • Hi Eire2Go

Thank you very much for your reply, it is very much appreciated.  Whilst it is possible Collis could have been Collins somewhere along the line further back.  All documents I have found so far have the spelling as Collis.

From the Irish Freeman the earliest information I could find has Collis, Henry, Revd. 13/10/1760.  I found this information from the website of Limericy City Council, Library, Local Studies.  I have absolutely no idea who this fellow is and where he fits in, sad to say.

    Cheers

    Judi

  • Hi Eire2Go, There are two children from the marriage of Henry Collis and Elizabeth nee Going that married into other families and it is from those families that descendants came to Australia.

Mary Going Collis married James Butler Boyd in 1832.  I have found 6 children from this couple and I know of 5 that came to Australia or New Zealand and then Australia. Eliza Mary Collis Boyd married James William Kingsley and they went to New Zealand.  After James' death Eliza and their two daughters ended up in Australia with Eliza passing away in Waverley, New South Wales.  Thomas James Boyd came to Australia and passed away in Kew, Victoria.  Mary Agnes Boyd came to Australia and passed away at Ipswich, Queensland.  She married Richard Gill.  Grace Marcella Boyd came to Australia and married John Pettigrew.  She passed away Brisbane, Queensland and was laid to rest with her husband in Ipswich, Queensland.  Henry Collis Boyd came to Australia came to Australia, having married Marcella Kingsley (daughter of Marcella Collis and Charles Kingsley).

Marcella Collis who married Charles Kingsley was also a daughter of Henry Collis and Elizabeth nee Going.  James William Kingsley mentioned above was also Henry and Elizabeth's son.

Henry James Collis Kingsley, son of Charles Kingsley and Marcella nee Collis came to Australia and passed away East Melbourne, Victoria.  Robert William Collis Kingsley also another son came to Australia and passed away Melbourne, Victoria.

I have not found any Collis family themselves that came to Australia from the lineage I am researching, it has been their descendants.  I hope the above all makes sense.

    Cheers  Judi

  • So it seems the descendants immigrated to various Australian states.

Until your posting I'd not seen the Collis surname. Now, another found. See the author in http://www.swinburne.edu.au/magazine/13/237/digital-divas-out-to-shake-rattle-and-roll-the-it-world-/

  • Hello,   I am researching the Butler James Boyd, son of James and Grace McGregor Boyd. I believe James is the brother of Thomas Boyd married Mary Ann and they are parents of James Butler Boyd.

Butler James Boyd, is found in apprenticehsip papers being apprenticed as a coachmaker, his mother Grace, signed the bond, as did Thomas and John Boyd, said to be the uncles, as Grace was widowed. This Butler James Boyd is found in Bucklebury England, married Ann Adams.  Butler James died in England in 1856.

James Butler Boyd married Mary Collis and after her death he married to Anne Charlotte Arthur. The marriage record gives his father's name as Thomas Boyd. James Butler Boyd died in 1858 in Limerick, Ireland, probate records show his wife as Ann Charlotte, the obituary of Mary Ann Boyd, widow of Thomas Boyd, states she died at the home of her 'son James B. Boyd' in Limerick.

It appears this Boyd family goes back to the Boyds of Kilmarnock.  Do you have any information on them or of Butler James Boyd?   Joanne

  • Hello Joanne.  Thank you for your reply.  I have Thomas Boyd marrying Bary Ann Boyd 3 October 1799 at Limerick.  Thomas Boyd I believe was born at Kilmarnock, Scotland about 1757.  I have not found the parents for Thomas so this will give me something to look into.  I have however found a brother for James Butler Boyd, David George Boyd born about 1806.

At this stage I do not believe Butler James Boyd and Thomas Boyd are related.  I have found instances where some who are researching the Boyd family have crossed between the two families with information.

It also gets a little messy with James Butler Boyd's marriage to Ann Charlotte Arthur as I have also found her name as Anna Camilla Arthur as well.  James and Ann/Anna were to have three daughters, one of them being Anna Camilla Boyd.  The other daughters are Charlotte Arthur Boyd and Georgina Jemima Boyd.

Ann/Anna nee Arthur passed away 16 August 1907 in Middlesex, England.  Charlotte Arthur Boyd passed away 2 September 1868 Cambrian Villas, London, England, Anna Camilla Boyd passed away 3 December 1930 in Middlesex, England and Georgina Jemima Boyd passed away 8 September 1875 London, England.

I was sent a GEDCOM of the Boyd Family but it is wrong as they indicate "my" James Butler Boyd is the son of James Boyd and Grace McGregor.  This is incorrect.  Why I am mentioning this is they have then gone on to say "my" James Butler Boyd married Ann nee Adams and gives information for this marriage plus children etc.

If you want I can send you a GEDCOM but you need to disregard who they have as "James Butler Boyd" born 4 February 1790 at Limerick and his marriage with Mary Collis being the son of James and Grace.  I believe  "James Butler Boyd" born February 1790 is your Butler James Boyd and the information for his marriage to Ann nee Adams is the information you are looking for.

    I hope this makes sense.

    Cheers Judi
