Hello I wonder if someone could help me with the 1901 census ?   I'm finding it a bit confusing !   my grandmother Mary Wyse parents John and Mary Wyse and all their children in Limerick.  John and Mary's son (Daniel ) Makes his mother Mary around 12/13 year old if Daniel was her son !  denomination RC . I think their parish maybe at Michaels . Many thanks Rosie.

  • Go back further to be certain that Daniel is Mary’s son.  Looking at the census I was very confused and amused that my great grandparents had three children, Mary Kate, Michael,  and Mary.  It seemed strange to name two daughters Mary.  After doing some research, I discovered that Mary Kate and Michael were my great grandfather’s children with his first wife who had died, and the second Mary was the daughter of his second wife.  There is no indication anywhere that my great grandfather ever adopted his second wife’s daughter, she is just listed as daughter on the 1901 and 1911 census.   People died so young at this time, it’s worth researching.

  • Rosie:

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Ages in the 1901 census were frquently understated. The ages in the 1911 census were more accurate particularly for adults because the Old Age Pension Act was passed in 1908 so there was an incentive to have your age accurate.

John Wise and Mary Ryan were married in 1872 and Mary showed her age as 18 (see fourth record) https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1872/11303/8146905.pdf

    Daniel was born in 1873

Looks like Mary understated her age by about six years.

  • Can I just say how truly grateful I am for all the information you have found for me I had only worked out the first Ellen must have died for another child to be named Ellen.  I'm an amateur but also I have a big fascination for family history. Once again thank you all .ps I have a photo of Margaret Wyse but forgotten how to load it !
