Looking to find more info on Keane family. Have bits and pieces of info trying to put all together. Looking specifically for Thomas Keane family. My Thomas was born in Newcastle West, Dec 1846 to Thomas Keane and Catherine Kenny. His father died in 1849, he went to USA in 1862 and worked with his Uncle Cornelius. His grandfather was Thomas Keane married to a McCarthy. His mother Catherine was the daughter of Jeremiah Kenny and Catherine McCorbett. Thomas has a brother Lawrence who also came to the US. He had one other brother Michael who became a Christian brother and stayed in Ireland. I have info on many other family members but have only traced one Uncle James, who became the Town Councilor in Cork and is the father of Augustus Henry Keane. Any one know of the Keane family in the Newcastle West area in the early 1800's?

    Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Have you tried looking in church records in Newcastle West for Keane?s in the early 1800?s? Catholic records there began in 1815:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=West%20Limerick&parish=Newcastle-West&churchid=891

Most Catholic records are held by the local clergy so it may be an idea to contact the local parish priest for possible assistance. As you can see from the above link Limerick Genealogy (research@limerickgenealogy.com) and the National Library of Ireland (info@nli.ie) have copies.

Church of Ireland records generally tend to have an earlier start date. Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42

Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.

You could also use the Tithe Applotment Books to see if there were Keanes in the area 1823-1838. You can search these online here:

    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

Some other websites that you may find useful are:

    Genealogy Links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/limerick/index.html

    Family Search: www.familysearch.org

I hope that some of this is helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,
