My ancestors Patrick Riedy and Ellen Foley had at least six children in 1830s-1840s. The children all emigrated to NSW Australia in 1855 as teenagers and orphans.

Perhaps the parents Patrick and Ellen are buried in St Ita's Graveyard. Wondering if there is a list of names of those buried.

Apart from their names, I have no other information on Patrick and Ellen. Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Chrissy

    Chrissy,

Reidy is not an unusual surname in Killeedy parish and the name appears in several townlands.  There are several baptisms listed in the parish register but the lack of variation in given names and omission of townlands in the entries make it difficult to associate the records with any specific person if the date of birth is not known.

If the family is from Tooreenagreana (or many other Killeedy townlands), they would most likely be buried at St. Ita's Cemetery in Ballagh near Ashford.  Newcastlewest is the nearest market town but the closest village and church would be Ashford.  St. Ita's Cemetery is not adjacent to the church in Ashford but on a separate parcel outside and north of the village (near the location of St. Ita's sixth century nunnery).  I haven't found a comprehensive online index for the cemetery.  It doesn't seem to be included in the historicgraves.com website that Miriam mentioned and the findagrave.com page for the cemetery only lists 16 burials (there are many more than that).  While there are many old graves and markers at St. Ita's Cemetery, most of the families have "recycled" their plots with more recent burials and stones.  So if Patrick and Ellen are buried there, it is possible that a more recent burial and marker are on the grave.

In the early 1900's, Ben Reidy was the head of household at Toorenagreana.  He actually immigrated to the U.S.A. in the late 1850s or early 1860s but later returned to Ireland with a new wife and a son born in New York.

I have family from Toorenagreana and most of the people still there are descendants of those that were there 150-200 years ago. Toorenagreana is a relatively small townland - about fifteen households and most of the residents then and now were/are at least distantly related.  Most have immigrated either to the U.S.A. or Australia.  Among the families of Tooreenagraena, the O'Sullivan sisters immigrated to the U.S.A. in the early 1900s.  The Buckleys immigrated to Brisbane and Adelaide, Australia around 1920. The long-established familes there also included Mulcahys, O'Connells, Fitzpatricks and Neligans.

If you can share birth dates for the children of Patrick and Ellen (Foley) Reidy, I may be able to link some of them to the parish register.

    Good luck with your hunting.

Hello, thank you so much for your reply. I thought I had joined this board and did not receive your reply. My mistake!

Attaching information on the family. Any help would be much appreciated.

All the children died in Australia.

    Cheers, Chrissy
