Which Jeremiah Malone is in the photo?

I see that you have not received any opinions. I'm not an expert but I would suggest that you look at the photos on our XO Chronicles sites and try to compare the photos and ages to your photo of Jeremiah Malone. My opinion is that the photo is for your elder Jeremiah.

Thank you Roger for your reply. Before I posted I looked at quite a few photos on the National Library of Ireland collection on Flickr. I realised that clothing for farmers stayed relatively the same over a long period. However, the Jeremiah in the photo is relatively young, so if is it Jeremiah senior pictured, the photo would have to be from perhaps around 1860 or 1870 at the latest. Most of the NLI photos I found from around the 1850s-60s period had clothing in quite a poor condition. And I couldn't see quite such fancy buttons on them. I couldn't work out what time period a similar hat came from but it seemed later rather than earlier. Similarly perhaps the facial hairstyle.

My other wondering was about the whip. I thought that maybe a farmer would be more likely to use such a whip as a tool of trade, and a horticultural instructor (the trade of the younger Jeremiah) perhaps less so.

Jeremiah senior would have got married around 1867. I am not sure if people took wedding/betrothal photos in that era at all, but his wife Margaret came from Ballylanders Parish, quite some distance away.

I'll keep looking at old photos and maybe I will eventually become more sure!

I am Peggy Malone Brennan's son, one and only, with 5 sisters to contend with. Your photograph would be my great-grandfather. It appears to be from the mid 1800's or thereabouts. I remember your Aunt Mary's visit to Ireland. I was a teenager at the time. A nice lady. Take care.

Oh Michael, I am very pleased to hear from you! We had some e-mail contact way back in 2004/5, and you obtained a list of family baptisms from the parish priest at Ballyhay Parish that showed we were second cousins. I tried to e-mail you recently but that old e-mail address didn't work anymore. Thank you for confirming which Jeremiah it is- my great-grandfather also- I am very pleased to be sure.

I did quite a bit of work during our lockdown here in New Zealand, largely using the Irish civil registration website, sorting out the who/when/where side of the Ballyhay and Rathkeale Malone families. Partly I was motivated because I had a reply to a message I sent to a DNA match who I thought must be a Malone. Turned out he was a son of Mary Kate so would be your first cousin? 
I'd love to share with you some of the info I sussed out- I have quite a bit on Google Drive- but I don't think I am supposed to put my e-mail address here. Will have to find out how to do it. I am away from home and my computer at present, but will be home again in a week or so.

I was planning to visit Ireland this year- I have worked out where the Riordans came from- but such was not to be, for the time being at least.
