Hello....I am searching for information on my GGG Grandparents, Michael McMahon (circa 1811) and Margaret McGrath (circa 1815).   I know that my GG Grandfather Patrick (1842) and his siblings, John, Catherine, Donald and Daniel were all baptized in Shanagolden.  They then immigrated to Admaston, Renfrew Ontario and my GGG Grandparents had 6 more children, Johanna, James, Michael, Cornelius, Michael and Patrick.   Unfortunately, I have not been able to find either Michael's or Margaret's birth/baptism record or their marriage record.    Would love to be able to find descendants.  If anyone has any information that they would be willing to share on the above, I would be very grateful since they are my major brick wall.

  • Kerry:

As you likely know, Shanagolden RC church records start in 1824 so if Margaret was from that parish, a marriage record should be available.

Likely Michael was from Shanagolden and Margaret was likely from an area north and west of Shanagolden parish. There are two RC parishes to the north and west: Glin and Loughil and both have records starting in the 1850s. Marriages were usually held in the bride's parish. I don't think you will locate a marriage record or baptismal records for Michael and Margaret.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • In 1852, in Griffith's Valuation of Limerick, the following McMahons were head of household in Shanagolden. There is a Michael in Ballynash, but it's not clear from your message if Michael was still in Ireland then. If he was, then the Ballynash man is likely your ancestor.

There are two Patricks, and as Michael's eldest son was called Patrick, one of these men may be Michael's father.
