My great great grandfather Edward Harden (aka Harding) died in Brooklyn, New York USA on 25 May 1889. Edward is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn. His gravestone inscription says he was born in 1813 in Granard, County Longford, Ireland. I believe Edward immigrated to America about 1840.  I wish to confirm this information and learn more about my Harden ancestors.

  • Hi Michael,

There are Roman Catholic church records available for the diocese of Granard (Ardagh and Clonmacnois). These date from 1779 for baptismal records, 1782 for marriage records and burial records. You can find these at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 4237, or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS), ref. no. 12792298 item 1-6; 1279270, 13-. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

You could try checking a number of other sources. 1800-1835 Freeholders list. LDS Film 100888.

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

1834 Granard RC parish; heads of household - with Catholic registers. National Library of Ireland.

1828-36 Freeholders' certificates. National Archives of Ireland, M.2781.

There is  a book by R.W. Stafford called St. Patrick's Church of Ireland Granard: Notes of Genealogical & Historical Interest. (1983).

Estate records are usually found at the national Library of Ireland. Here are the relvant ones for Granard:

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.
